What a fabulous day for a Hatchery working-bee on Saturday (8/15)!! Overgrowth cleared, gardens watered and tended too......and a new side door patio constructed!! Oooooo-la-la......how fancy!! Been on the wish- list for some time, but with the opportunity to use some discarded paving bricks from our amazing community partner, the City of Port Moody and left over 6" x 6" timbers from the pond flume renovation project a few weeks back, the time was right!!!... So as well as our usual amazing volunteers (Dilveen, Sigrid, Christina and Glenda) covering normal Saturday 'hatchery business', Emma, Angie, Dave and Brian got down to patio construction!!! I think you'll agree the result looks super inviting and welcoming. The additional benefit is that it negates the large area at the side door that used to get all muddy and sloppy when it rained!! Thanks team............job DONE!!!!

Monday July 27th and Tuesday July 28th saw some much needed maintenance work done at the hatchery! The wooden lined flume between the Coho rearing pond and the channel to Noons Creek has been in disrepair for some time. Installed around 30 years ago, it has been a blessing to us - enabling a much easier way to catch our Coho Broodstock each year. But, the last few years has seen the wood become rotted and it needed to be stabilized. This has been a project that's been id...entified as a priority for some time as the deteriorating state of the channel was such that there were safety concerns. After Board approval for the expenditure, some new cedar timbers were acquired to replace those that had started to fail. Super thanks to Brian Smith, the DFO's community advisor, and Dave, Sigrid, Nancy, and Nancy's husband Mike for their willingness to get in there and get the job done. As you can see from the photos, it was a big and dirty job. It's a big relief that this has been completed. Thanks again to the members of the board who participated in this for their outstanding work!

Saturday was a fabulous day for hatchery maintenance at Noons Creek!! Weather was perfect, and so were the contented smiles on our amazing 'socially distanced' volunteers!! Whether carting gravel for evening out trail surfaces (from overflowing creek washouts) or planting natives and removing invasives, it was happy hands on deck!!! Ohhhhhh.....and the Coho are doing well too!!... Enjoy this amazing weather we're having - and stay safe!!!!
