Carbon monoxide alarms need to be installed outside sleeping areas where they will awake you in an emergency. For added piece of mind, putting an extra one in the basement is a great idea too.

Burnt toast? Something dripped on the burner? Taking down a smoke alarm during a false alarm is not permitted. Pushing the 'hush' button (sometimes it's also the 'test' button) will silence the alarm for a few minutes before automatically returning to service.

Candles become a greater fire concern this time of year. Make sure candles have stable holders and lots of clearance from combustibles. If you leave the room extinguish the candle.

Katie knows how to use a fire extinguisher (and decorate a pumpkin!). Remember that a fire extinguisher should only be used if you are confident in it's use and the fire is about the size of that pumpkin. Keep those entries coming!

It's furnace start up time! Clean/change filters and furnace components before first ignition. Have your furnace checked out by a professional if it needs attention, and have a working CO alarm. Many CO incidents happen at first ignition. #NCFireBricks
