Source Library and Archives Canada ON THIS DAY April 15, 1912... The RMS Titanic sinks off the coast of Newfoundland, a mere five days after leaving on its maiden voyage from Southampton, England. Some 700 of the 2200 people on board survive; 1500 are lost. There are more than 20 Canadians aboard the ship when it hits an iceberg, including Charles M. Hays, president of the Grand Trunk Railway, his wife Clara, and his daughter and son-in-law, Orion and Thornton Davidson. Hays and his party are travelling home to Montréal and plan to attend the grand opening of the Château Laurier Hotel in Ottawa on April 26, 1912. The two women survive the sinking, but both men perish. The RMS Carpathia will bring the survivors to New York City, while many victims will be brought to Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Enjoy this lovely day and be glad that it isn't 1886!
Sergeant Baltej Singh Dhillon, a Sikh, is the first Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) officer allowed to wear a turban. The decision will be challenged three years later, and the Canadian Human Rights Commission will uphold the right of Sikh RCMP officers to wear turbans.://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/onthisday/Pages/march.aspx#tab15
Please see the following from Valerie Hickey: Hello, I am the Chair of the Long Point Biosphere Reserve. We enhance community and ecosystem well-being and unite people with nature. I'm messaging you to see if you can provide the history of Indigenous peoples who lived and hunted in Norfolk County - Attawandaron, Anishnabec, Mississaugas of the Credit, others - and any Treaty details you may know of, other than what we can find online. Our goal is to share conservation knowledge using both Western and Indigenous perspectives. Hope you can help? Other than the Norfolk Archives, can anyone out there give her some guidance?
Please contact your councilors before it's too late.
Sad news from the Norfolk Historical Society Jim Pond, a great friend of the NHS, passed away last Thursday. Jim was an ardent researcher, a dedicated volunteer, a longtime member and past Board member of the NHS. He cared deeply about the Society and the Eva Brook Donly Museum. We will miss him.

Norfolk Historical Society opposes further cuts to Norfolk County’s museum budget. For the past 9 months, all of Norfolk County’s museums have been closed, with one being eliminated. There is no plan to reopen any of the museums until February of 2021, even though every county bordering Norfolk has opened theirs. ... At the December 8 meeting of Norfolk County Council, further reductions to the museum budget were suggested. One of the suggestions for savings was the elimination of another museum. The NHS believes that all of Norfolk’s museums, and the Archives at Eva Brook Donly can and should be opened as soon as possible, and should be maintained for the benefit of their respective communities. Council is considering its options for its January 6-7 deliberations. Another closure should not be one of them. If you believe in the value of preserving and supporting our county’s unique heritage, please contact your Councillor. The Parliament of Canada passes legislation giving some women the right to vote in federal elections. This right is limited to women who are British subjects; 21 years of age or older; and the wife, widow, mother, sister or daughter of any person, male or female, living or dead, who had served in the military. Another law grants the right to vote to some 2,000 military nurses, known as Bluebirds, stationed in Europe. After the 1917 election, the government will extend this right to all non-Indigenous Canadians who are British subjects and 21 years of age or older.

This Day in History June 16, 1946 The Canadian government deports 3,964 formerly interned individuals to Japan. The American ship S.S. General M.C. Meigs sets sail for Japan with the Japanese-Canadian and Japanese-American deportees aboard.... Mackenzie King's government decided that Japanese-Canadians, who had been interned during the Second World War, would not be permitted to return to the Pacific Coast because of concerns about their national loyalties. They were given only two choices: move east of the Rocky Mountains, or go to occupied Japan. In 1988, Prime Minister Brian Mulroney will apologize on behalf of the Canadian government for the internment and subsequent deportation. He will also repeal the War Measures Act, making similar occurrences in the future impossible. - from Library and Archives Canada
