Great to see the pupils from Merkinch Primary School enjoying their new school. NORR's Inverness studio designed this large extension to the existing school in Inverness, Scotland, future-proofing the building for generations of students. Our design delivers a state-of-the-art education facility whilst remaining respectful to the original Category B Listed building. Merkinch is the first primary school in the Highlands to be built using Cross-Laminated Timber, which is more sustainable than traditional methods of construction. Last season (2019-2020) the team completed the earthworks and installation of the ground anchors for the new Discovery building. Facilities will include preparation areas for field expeditions, a central store, medical facility, offices, recreational spaces and workshops. How do designers provide ongoing value through the lifecycle of a building? The short answer is through digital assets and rich data generated from Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Digital Twins created during the design and construction phase. Space Hub Sutherland, the first satellite launch site proposed for Scotland, reaches another exciting milestone as the project secured planning permission from Highland Council. The first of two Big Lifts of the Sky Bridge connecting the historic Beanfield Centre at Exhibition Place to Hotel X Toronto is now complete. As part of a revitalization plan in Norristown, PA, we are giving a complete facelift to its busy government and court complex, One Montgomery Plaza. The reskinning of the facade is well underway in planned construction phases based on vertical sections, which means the building remains functional and occupied through the entire project. Eight years ago this week, on June 23, 2012, a partial collapse of the roof of the Algo Centre Mall in Elliot Lake, ON resulted in the death of two victims and injury of others. We take this eight-year anniversary to remember and commemorate the victims of the collapse and the Elliot Lake community. OPP commissioned NORR to carry out a forensic investigation into the cause of collapse and the parameters that influenced it. Hassan Saffarini, Manager, Structural Engineering led... the effort and mobilized a team of professionals, NORR issued a report in March 2013 to OPP which subsequently was referenced extensively by the Elliot Lake Commission of Inquiry and by the judge on the criminal case associated with the collapse. Hassan reflects on the impact that this collapse has had on the engineering profession, which some would characterize as a wake-up call to engineers, authorities having jurisdiction and building operators. The team included professionals specialized in concrete technology, metallurgy and corrosion specialists from NORR, Giatec, BMT Fleet Tech and the National Research Council of Canada. At the request of the OPP during the investigation, NORR produced a report video that would explain what happened to a layperson. This NORR report has been shared by the Commission and can be viewed below.
