If you know how to sew and have some time to donate, we are in need of volunteers to help us sew masks for the community! Now that masks are mandatory in public... spaces, there is a great need for non-medical masks to provide to folks visiting the clinic who cannot afford to purchase or make a mask themselves. We will be holding two physically distanced sewing-bees next week, with supplies and equipment provided - all you need to do is pre-register and then show up to help sew! Each session is limited to 5 volunteers, so please contact our Community Engagement Coordinator, Claire, to register in advance: [email protected] or (204) 589-9418.

On October 1, protections for tenants that have been in place since almost the beginning of the pandemic are coming to an end - including a postponement of all ...non-urgent evictions, frozen rent increase, and no penalties for non-urgent evictions. This is a looming crisis and the province must act now. Many Make Poverty History MB coalition members and community supporters, led by advocacy from North End Community Renewal Corporation (NECRC) wrote to the Province including Minister of Families Heather Stefanson last week, calling for: Continuing the eviction moratorium Strike a working group with government and community to: Devise a repayment plan process for tenant in arrears before evictions are granted Increase supports under Rent Assist Improve supports for landlords who are housing vulnerable tenants Devising a phased approach to lifting the moratorium and allowing for rent increase Read the article for more information: "I feel really frustrated and I don't know what I will do, because I have three boys and I'm a single mom and I don't have any income," said Negash. She is one of potentially thousands of Manitobans who could find themselves forced out of their homes in the coming months. At the beginning of the pandemic in March, the province postponed all non-urgent evictions, froze rent increases, and banned penalties for late rent payments. In June, those protections were extended to Sept. 30, but they were not included when the province announced earlier this month that it was renewing other emergency measures. ... Between 5,456 and 7,882 Manitoba tenants are in arrears and cannot or could not pay their rent during the pandemic, according to a Sept. 17 report from the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives. Once the Residential Tenancies Branch resumes holding eviction hearings next month, housing advocates in Winnipeg fear the number of people forced into precarious housing or homelessness could spike over the fall and winter." #mbpoli #kNOwPoverty
