Explore BC with Locals: Meet D. Rigo Photography! "My name is Darrin Rigo - I am a photographer/videographer lucky enough to call Prince George and Northern BC ...my home. There are so many reasons to love this city - the community, the access to outdoors, and the amazing food - but geographically, it's also right in the middle of this beautiful region. This means living (and/or visiting) Prince George comes with an easy opportunity to explore some of the province's undiscovered gems. We are called the basecamp to the North for a reason. When people think Northern BC, I think the expectation is scenic mountains, lakes and rivers - and we'll get to that - but I think any trip up North needs to be done alongside the BC Ale Trail and some of BC's finest craft beer. That journey starts in Quesnel with Barkerville Brewing Co. (fun fact: it's BC's all female-owned and -operated brewery) but should consider a stop at any of our Northern breweries: Trench Brewing & Distilling, CrossRoads Brewing & Distillery, Three Ranges Brewing Company, Smithers Brewing Co., Bulkley Valley Brewery, Sherwood Mountain Brewhouse Ltd. and Wheelhouse Brewing Co. Next up, any fall or winter trip to Prince George must include a drive about an hour east to Chun T’oh Whudujut Park and Protected Area (The Ancient Forest). Giant trees, babbling streams, stunning mountains and massive waterfalls along a universally-accessible boardwalk. But, fall colours come alive in the beautiful parks around the city too - Lheidli T'enneh Memorial Park is a local favourite but you really can't go wrong - consider an evening stroll along the river and see some of the beautiful cottonwoods surrounding the city. As I mentioned, being in Northern BC's basecamp means you should try to find your way out to explore the region (in any direction) and so consider heading out into an area like the Skeena Valley and the Terrace region, book a heli-trip (whether that's skiing, touring, etc) with one of the local heli companies like Quantum or Northern Escape Heli Skiing. It's the best way to see the moody fall mountains in the valley." Stay tuned every week as we feature favourite places and activities of local residents to help you rediscover BC this fall.

Would you take a road trip through small towns in search of craft beer? The Northern BC Ale Trail is an adventure all on its own. Start your journey at Wheelhou...se Brewing Company in Prince Rupert. Grab a socially-distanced pint while overlooking a misty harbour of fishing boats from their newly-built patio. Tour the area on a guided canoe trip with Outer Coast Outfitters and dine on fresh fish at Fukasaku Sushi post-paddle. Continue the Ale Trail journey through Terrace, Smithers, Prince George, Valemount, and Quesnel for eight more breweries along this wilderness route.
