Yesterday was our last day before the officially mandated ‘shutdown’. We had several amazing students rushing in to drop off toys for our NKS Chum CityTV toy drive. I hope this post is not too subversive for FB to take it down.

From: heidi w Sent: October-16-20 8:02 PM To: [email protected]; [email protected] Subject: Bylaws and Stage 2 rollbacks Dear Premier Ford & Mayor Tory, Our family was informed today that bylaw officers have asked Northern Karate School to return to Zoom only classes because of the recent rollback of some sector businesses into stage 2. We are really struggling with this enforcement because of the physical and mental health wellness our karate school provides both my daughter and I. Their strict health and safety protocols for on-site classes provide far better security than what I have seen from my daughter's school that has already had 3 cases traced back to it. Both are schools but NKS provides me with more health and safety peace of mind. Northern Karate School is NOT a gym and it goes above and beyond all of the required guidelines. It has ZERO cases of covid-19 traced back to it. At a time when we need the support and positive energy of our community at Northern Karate we have been cut off from that again but without you sharing any data or evidence that would help us understand the decisions governing these recent bylaws. We owe so very much to our karate school and our Senseis as it relates to coping with the stresses of COVID. I would be on mental health leave from work if it wasn't for them. Beyond needing to go out and buy groceries it is what I would deem an essential trip out of the house right now. Residents have been shared very little in regards to the data that has dictated these closures. Bad behaviour and people spread the virus, not places. And even if the trace data points to a category of business like gyms being higher risk, classifying a karate school as a gym tells me you know very little about how a dojo opetates. It is a lazy broad classification that has led to shutting a school and wellness centre that is ulitmately going to put the mental and physical health of thousands of toronto residients across this city at risk. NKS Tribe - hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. We're grateful you're part of the NKS family. FYI - in celebration of the holiday, I sent emails, and poste...d comments to FB and Twitter thanking Mr. Ford, Mr. Tory and Dr. de Villa for their service and inquiring about sector-specific info for the most recent Phase 2 roll-backs (cut/paste below). Apparently, these stats aren't available/published...anywhere, and as citizens and their constituents, we deserve to know how they're managing our city, province and lives. I encourage all Ontario residents and businesses to do likewise. Premier Ford, Mayor Tory and Dr. de Villa - Happy Thanksgiving. Even in these challenging times, we are grateful for many things including your service. With respect to Oct. 9th roll-backs following 939 new cases, instead of regional Covid-19 mapping, where can we find the details for current outbreaks by organization, type of business or sector (i.e. number of cases traced to elementary and secondary schools, long-term care facilities, hospital/health care centres, restaurants, malls/stores, yoga and dance studios, martial arts centres, gyms, houses of worship, large social gatherings including weddings, rallies, etc.)? Happy Thanksgiving Weekend. With regard to today's closure of gyms, NKS are not affected. We are open today and will re-open Tuesday Oct 13th 1. Gyms are closed We are not a "gym". We are a school.... We don't have "workout plans". We have a curriculum + (belt) exams. We don't have "studios". We have dojo/classrooms. We do not have "trainers", "customers" or "clients". We have teachers and students. 2. We are members of a Provincial Sports Organisation (PSO) 3. We use all indoor gathering protocols Masks - temp. check - screening interview - 6 ft. distancing - zero contact - hand sanitation - dojo cleaned after every class + equipment disinfected before/after use - contact tracing Stay healthy + safe, and keep kicking, punching + smiling at NKS!

How is this even possible? How can an award-winning photographer who routinely takes photos of Rihanna, Beyoncé, Brad Pitt... to take photos at our NKS dojos?

To our colleagues, dojo members and political supporters. We the martial art teachers care deeply about our members. They are not customers or clients, they our students and family. We have nothing to do with ‘gyms’ or ‘studios’. Assuring safety, physical and mental health is our daily priority. See you in class...

As NKS strives to protect student, family, team and community well-being, we call your attention to the following protocols: Masks must be worn when entering a...nd leaving the dojo. Face coverings must also remain in-place until all students are positioned in the classroom (before the session begins/after the warm-up), when crossing the dojo floor, and in the event social distancing is (briefly) reduced. As we monitor on-site attendance, students are also required to arrive on time and must be screened prior to entering the school. Adhering to these and other procedures (see bulletins and signage on-site) will help us keep the NKS family healthy and happy, with thanks for your cooperation.
