This is hilarious! Certainly innovative, but one of those instances where the imagined result is based on ideals and falls flat on its face in reality... Yes, as a publisher, marketing is a BIG thing. It doesn't matter if you have the best writers and books in your arsenal; if you don't grow an audience for the books, they're not going to go anywhere. Exposure is everything. Personally, I wouldn't use Tinder to go to a book fest and find love... I would just go to a book fest... and find books. Then again, I'm not who this marketing campaign was targeting anyways. Have a read! http://scroll.in//what-happens-when-a-publisher-and-a-dati

Speaking as both an author and an independent publishing house, I am in the unique position of seeing the playing field from two points of view. So, reading this article about the BookExpo, which brings together publishers and booksellers annually in one big organized event, being closed down because of the turn in the economy for major publishers like Penguin and Random House, was really sad. This was all the way back in 2009, and at least BookExpo in NYC is still going on today (this year, it's from May 31 to June 2). But my first thought that a convention like this should still be available to help support the smaller and/or indie publishers, and help them get their books out to more venues. Have you been wanting to give winter camping and winter thru-hiking a go? Have you stopped yourself from getting out there into winter's playground because you thought you had too little experience? Well, winter isn't over yet; you still have time! Take a leap of faith and snowshoe on. :) Fairie Lights and Empty Houses is a real account of a first-timer's experience winter camping. There are countless guides written by professionals and lots of people with experience, but ver...y few told from the perspective of a first-timer. Want to try reading something from a peer rather than a seasoned pro? Give this book a try. On sale now for CAD$4.99, only for the next 24 hours! Originally CAD$8.50. Here's an excerpt from the book: It seems like winter is just a season that we wait out, that we have to endure until summer returns, I remarked to Zane. We were now on the outskirts of Owen Sound. But it doesn’t have to be that way. You’re so lucky to live out here. Zane nodded. Yeah, but I can completely understand why people in the city don’t like winter. When I was living in the city during college, oh man, I hated it! The sidewalks are all just slush and salt, and the carssplashing dirty water onto you as they drive past. No, winter in the city is slippery and dangerous. It’s yucky! I can’t blame them for wanting to stay indoors. They don’t get to experience it here, in the countryside, where the snow is actually white and you can play in it. There was indeed a freedom in the wintry country. We could holler and shout because there was no one else around. We sang at the top of our lungs, aiming for high notes we wouldn’t dare to in our own apartment, with the neighbours just a thin wall away. Here, we had all the space we could ever desire. We were city children finally in the countryside, and here, we could just be children. https://www.amazon.ca//dp/B06X8YD/ref=zg_bs_5794542011_37

Check out the video I made for my book Fairie Lights and Empty Houses! It's a short little thing I pulled together from the sadly sporadic moments during the trip that I managed to tape (and, ironically, I failed to videotape any of the actual CAMPING) but hopefully it gives you a little more of an idea of what being out there in the winter countryside is like! Enjoy! :D If you liked the video, feel free to share it! Even better, help support my indie project by buying the bo...ok! You can find it on my personal website here: http://www.alaskarue.com///fairie-lights-and-empty-houses/ It's cheaper on my own website, but if you'd prefer to buy it on Amazon, you can find it here: https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B06X8YDMYM/ref=sr_1_1 Happy reading, and happy wintering!
