Construction is underway!!! Construction has begun for the Franklin and Main Park in downtown Fort McMurray. The project will be constructed by Wilco Contractors Northwest Inc. with completion expected by Fall 2021. Here are some photos of the final designs.... Throughout public engagement resident’s feedback was considered and reflected as part of the final design. The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) would like to thank all residents for their ongoing support and feedback regarding the park. The project will address vacant land through the development of an inclusive community park that contributes to improved health and safety and beautification, while supporting ongoing investment and revitalization downtown. Some featured amenities are: - Full-size FIBA basketball court / multi-use surface - Medicine wheel rock garden - Natural playground - Micro business spaces - Public washrooms - Individual and group seating areas - Outdoor electronic charging stations - Onsite access to electricity for special events - Bike racks - Landscaped areas including trees - Interactive water fountain feature - Multi-Color atmosphere lighting - Shade structures - Flag poles including one for special events - Inviting pathways - Community event space - Ice skating path area - Winter warm up areas - Public art elements - Parking - Interpretive elements - Heritage plaque - Food service area - Multi-use seating and stage platform To stay updated on construction updates visit rmwb.ca/construction and subscribe! Congratulations to Coach Jinan for being named to YMM Magazine's 2020 Top 50 Under 50 list! It took years for her to feel that she had found her place in Canada. When trying to navigate in a country that reeks with unfamiliarity, you are fixated on survival. I was lost but I eventually ...found my place in sports, she recalled. In Grade 8, I was encouraged by my gym teacher to try out for the basketball team. That day transformed my life. I went from googling ‘What is a Point Guard?’ to having the opportunity of being a part of a National Championship basketball team at the varsity level. In 2018, she suffered a severe concussion and it was the team of athletic therapists who inspired her to pursue an education in sports medicine. She is currently enrolled in Athletic Therapy at Mount Royal University in Calgary. The athletic therapists who helped me through months of rehabilitation really inspired me, Jinan shared. Through Athletic Therapy, I have found a profession that encompasses both of my passions, medicine and sport. Jinan’s passion for promoting physical activity prompted her to create WomEnpowerment in 2018 with a group of her friends. It is a project that aims to empower women through physical activity by facilitating online workouts, fitness challenges, and (pre-COVID) in-person events.

On Tuesday, December 8th, the Government of Alberta announced new restrictions to slow the spread of Covid-19. These restrictions are in addition to existing restrictions announced on November 13th. These mandatory restrictions apply province-wide and will be in place for at least four weeks. The health and safety of our community is our number one concern and mitigating the risk of virus transmission is absolutely necessary at this time. Our goal is to finish the Fall 2020 season once the 4-week ban is complete. We will continue to monitor the situation and release further updates and rescheduling information for each division as required. Earlier this Fall, we met with the RMWB and discussed the Franklin+Main Park Project. We explored the idea of adding an outdoor basketball court to the space (currently an empty lot behind The Keg, A&W, and the Red Cross). The RMWB took our feedback and has now released two ...design concepts for the downtown revitalization project. Design concept #2 features a basketball court and we LOVE it!!! This new court would make basketball more accessible to so many families living downtown and would give kids in our community a safe space to play. Please participate in this quick RMWB survey so they know how many community members support the idea of adding a new basketball court to this new park.
