During this global Covid 19 pandemic, we are doing our utmost to ensure the safety of our guests and crew, employing thorough cleaning protocols, poly barriers ...and physical distancing. At the present time, we are taking reservations from residents of British Columbia only, and will take reservations from other Provinces and countries when health authorities deem it is safe to do so. In order to further limit exposure, our trips this year will be three hours in duration and will not include lunch. All guests and crew will be required to wear masks during the tour. If you cannot provide your own mask, let us know. The cost per person is $130.00 (plus 5% GST). Preferred payment method is email money transfer to, once again, limit exposure for both guests and staff. We will not be able to run our tours on a daily basis and will be running twice a week (to start with), on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Trips depart at 1:00 pm and will return to the dock at 4:00 p.m. No tourism bookings for the month of June, these measures remain in place until June 30 at the earliest as per Transport Canada Regulations.

This week Port McNeill says goodbye to Gerry Furney, a founding member of the Port McNeill Rotary Club. Saw this picture hanging in the General Properties offic...e yesterday and thought it was a great tribute to the vitality of Gerry Furney and Bill Velie in their younger days. If you find yourself saying what could I do? Think of everything that Gerry Furney accomplished and get busy. Your local Rotary Club will do our best to honour such a legacy.

[UPDATE: And right NOW April 30 at 4 PM - they are off Alert Bay! Known due to ID photos from Jared Towers. Previous sighting was near Campbell River at 10:46 y...esterday, known thanks to Jack Springer]. It takes a community . . . can't say that enough. Thanks to all who have recently relayed photos of these two Humpbacks (from well outside 100m). Every sighting is of value in better understanding range and habitat use, social associations, etc. First known 2018 sightings in BC waters of these two whales were in the lower Strait of Georgia as of April 20. All recent sightings relayed to us show them together. With regard to social associations of Humpbacks off our coast, other than mothers with their first year calf and Humpbacks that group bubble-net feed (a strategy often used from BC's central coast into Alaska), Humpbacks more often appear to have intermittent and varying social associations in the inshore waters of Vancouver Island. It's all about bulking up in our rich waters and lunge-feeding as individuals is the feeding strategy most often employed in this area. There are big exceptions e.g. KC and Arial are often seen together. Regarding these two Humpbacks, we have no documentation of Uluka and Slate associating in previous years. They are known to often be in the area from Campbell River to Victoria. About identifying them as individuals: Humpbacks with all black tails are much more difficult to discern as individuals (and to nickname ) than those with some white markings. You can see from our catalogue photos here how distinct their dorsals fins can be and how this helps with IDs. MERS Humpback catalogue photos shown here from Marilia Olio and Tasli Shaw / Humpbacks of the Salish Sea. Now with Humpbacks predictably being in BC waters, it is so essential to know how to avoid collision with these large and unpredictable whales and what to do and NOT to do re. entanglement. Some days, the sheer number, enormity, and complexity of the environmental problems we face can seem daunting. At #OceansInitiative, we believe in facing those ...problems head-on, and using our scientific skills to find #creative #solutions. On #EarthDay, and every day, we face #conservation issues by conducting "use-inspired" #science. In our case, this means that conservation drives the questions we ask, the way we answer them, and the way we engage with potential users of the new knowledge we generate. Outreach is not an afterthought. We consider conservation--the ultimate goal of our efforts--at every stage of our work. This helps guarantee that our time and your #charitable donations are spent doing projects that help make the ocean clean, quiet, and full of #wildlife. Will you consider making an #EarthDay donation to support our #nonprofit conservation work? Thank you for your support.

Land folk chaff sailors for their jargon. That’s understandable if you’re telling a short-order cook to belay that hot sauce, but the exactness of marine ter...minology is practical. In a squall, a skipper can’t equivocate: Grab that string! Not the fat one, the thin one next to it! Practice and deploy the ability to direct crew to tighten or slack a specific dockline. ~Jan Adkins, author and illustrator, Getting Started in Boats: Making Fast, Part 2: Ashore, WoodenBoat No. 262 May/June 2018. https://www.woodenboat.com/current-issue-woodenboat-magazine See more
