This article is a great explanation of how myccorhizae work within the soils of the forests and why it's critical for forest professionals and private stewards to make good decisions on management https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=4093496767379437&id=237050606357425
We've been recently doing some upgrades at the office. New sign and fence. All locally produced and installed. We have more projects we hope to be able to post about in the near future.
This is an out of province virtual woodlot owner conference but many interesting topics. Anyone is free to register. https://www.ontariowoodlot.com//OWA%20AGM%20April%2020%20- Here is the link to register... https://www.ontariowoodlot.com//owa-2021-annual-general-me See more
Great initiative for those that live in Colchester. Don't think you have to live in Colchester though to participate https://www.facebook.com/221632288027318/posts/1551100281747172/
As a member of the forest sector we pride ourselves on following the most current science. Although relationships in the soil have been known for some time they just haven't been talked about all that much until recently. This relationship has a direct impact on the productivity in our forests which directly translates into economic impacts if we perform the wrong forest prescriptions that harm the soil relationships described in this article. https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-48257315
Horse logging in New Annan Colchester County. Most of this woodlot has had mechanical harvesters thin throughout. This area was left for as a reserve for really light forestry activities. We are removing the balsam fir and some large Red Spruce that were showing signs of decline. This is a great example of landowners being able to carry out their own work even after commercial harvests have taken place.

Although beavers can be destructive around roads they are valuable ecologically.

Commercial Thinning in Red Pine on North Nova land in Oxford Junction. We are removing 35 -40%, slightly more than other softwood species. This is because Red Pine needs a good crown ratio to grow well and is well rooted. They will also respond quickly and fill in the crown void. Another great job by Kim Construction. Well done guys.

Please be sure to attend. This couple has taken some innovative steps to restore their woodlot from neglect and poor forestry practices. https://fb.me/e/1yeVfIu8r
Virtual workshop for those interested
Watson family woodlot New Annan Colchester County We have performed various treatments throughout our woodlot. This is and example of a commercial thinning next to a restoration harvest treatment.
Hardwood commercial thinning in Lynn Mountain on two members forests. The stand is 60 to 80 years old with some older trees scattered throughout. These trees have future sawlog potential. The removal rate is about 35% . Road building at the the same time as well.
Good article. There are some things to question but generally the content is what was put forward by Bill Lahey in his final report. https://www.corporateknights.com//clearcutting-planets-ca/
