Take a bow, Dawn Knudsen The depth of artistic talent in Northumberland County is deep and Exhibit A for that argument is a little gallery and shop at 8 Queen Street in Port Hope. Northumberland Arts is filled with a wide variety of paintings, jewellery, wood carvings, photography, one-of-kind ceramics, hand-woven items etc. ... In the next several months, Northumberland Arts will be profiling the many men and women whose creativity keeps the shelves stocked and the gallery walls covered. Today’s profile: Dawn Knudsen, photographer and gallery volunteer. Dawn has been scouring Northumberland County with cameras in hand since she moved to Port Hope. Her interest in photography began in childhood. Dawn's work has been featured in art shows and guide books and in 2009, her Monarch Butterflies photograph won first prize in the Oak Ridges Moraine photo competition. She has been able to devote more time to photography since she retired from her elementary school teaching job after 37 years in Etobicoke and Peel schools. When she discovered Northumberland Arts, she not only began providing framed wildlife photos, she has been selling her appealing greeting cards featuring her work. Her forte, natural images, but with her photographer/husband Larry Keeley, also enjoys photographing people and interesting objects. As a team, they opened D & L Photography in January of 2007. Dawn and Larry are also official photographers for Lang Pioneer Village Museum in Keene, capturing people having fun and museum artifacts and buildings.
Northumberland Arts gallery and shop thanks SNAP'D Northumberland West for featuring a number of our local Northumberland County artists, both online and in their October 2020 print edition. https://northumberlandwest.snapd.com/events/view/1330978
Take a bow, Brent Sanderson Northumberland Arts, a little shop around the corner from the main street of historic Port Hope, depends on the creativity of its artists and the dedication of its volunteers. The not-for-profit gallery and shop at 8 Queen Street, next door to Dreamers’ Café, home of the famous Crazy Cookie, is open throughout the year so the demand for product is high.... In the next several months, Northumberland Arts will be profiling the many men and women whose creativity keeps the shelves stocked and the gallery walls covered. Our first profile: Brent Sanderson. Brent grew up in the Marmora/Crowe Lake area of Ontario watching his father make furniture from the wood he harvested and milled. Their home was heated by wood. So, as Brent says, wood has been a constant in his life. But Brent didn’t fully pursue his passion for wood carving until after he retired from a 33-year career in banking, 27 of them in Northumberland. After carving out his first burl from Northern Ontario, he had found his niche. Today, from his shop in Gore's Landing, he is providing Northumberland Arts with popular one-of-a-kind wood carvings using an angle grinder and an attached chainsaw head. Brent notes he does not harvest living Jack Pine burls and various types of local wood for his creations, just trees that need to be removed.

A new exhibit opened last Thursday at Northumberland Arts gallery and shop, featuring artist Michael Glover with selections from his From Sea to Sea collection of oil paintings. Thank you Ken Solilo, photographer, and SNAP'D for this great coverage.
Seven watercolours by the late Cobourg artist Donald Ketcheson have been added to the Northumberland Arts gallery for a one-month exhibit. Born in Regina, Saskatchewan, Donald studied art while attending the University of Manitoba's School of Architecture and Interior design. He later managed his own design firm in Toronto for 45 years. The well-known interior designer, an active supporter of the Art Gallery of Northumberland and Friends of Music, died in December of 2018. Gone but not forgotten.
