Screening for oral cancer is something we take very seriously and is something we do for our clients at every appointment, every time. Oral cancer is diagnosed two times more often in men than in women. Risk factors for oral cancer include age (over 40) and regular use of alcohol and tobacco products, but it can happen to anyone. Oral cancer kills approximately one person per hour. So if you are wondering why we stretch your lips and make you do tongue acrobatics at... your appointment, this is why! After working 15 years in private practice, Liz is branching out to work as an independent dental hygienist. Congratulations Liz! You are going to love it! Please help us in welcoming Liz! Hello! My name is Liz Rylance and I am so excited to be joining the team at Northumberland Dental Hygiene Clinic! For as long as I can remember, I have wanted... to work in the dental field. I started my career as a Dental Assistant, graduating from Durham College in 1999. I knew right away that I wanted to be a Dental Hygienist and I completed the Dental Hygiene program at Algonquin College in 2002. Since then, I have been helping my clients to keep their smiles healthy in the Northumberland area, working in local dental practices. When Mary approached me to become independent and join her practice, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to deliver treatment to my clients in a way that I have always wanted to! My goal is to provide personalized, thorough, gentle and stress-free care to my clients in a calm and pressure-free environment. I am currently a member of our provincial association, the Ontario Dental Hygiene Association, as well as our national association, the Canadian Dental Hygiene Association. I regularly attend educational courses so I am practicing up to current standards of care. I am proud to say that Northumberland Dental Hygiene Clinic meets and even exceeds the new safety guidelines regarding COVID-19. The safety and health of our clients is our number one concern and we will do whatever it takes to maintain it. When I am not elbow-deep in an oral cavity, I enjoy spending time with my husband Will and my two children, Jack and Olivia. I also love to cook and I am passionate about health and fitness. My remaining free time is spent volunteering with the Cobourg Police Service as an Auxiliary Constable. I look forward to this next chapter in my career. If we have to wear masks now, we might as well have fun doing it! Open wide!

UPDATE!!!! We are re-opening our clinic on Tuesday, August 4th! Even though we have seen many changes over the last few months during the pandemic, our commitment to you has not changed. Your safety is our top priority and to keep you safe, we are following strict guidelines put in place by our governing body, the CDHO as well as Public Health of Ontario. New policies and procedures concerning infection control have also been implemented. With your heath and well being in ...mind, you will see some new changes at your next appointment. These include: 1. Pre-screening done over the phone at least 2 days prior to your appointment 2. We ask that you arrive alone (except young children or clients that require assistance) 5 minutes before appointment time wearing a mask or one will be provided to you 3. Your temperature will be taken by a contactless thermometer to ensure that you do not have a fever 4. We ask that you perform hand hygiene via hand sanitizer 5. Screening will be done by questionnaire upon arrival 6. Our operatories are pretty bare now 7. You will be given a mouthrinse containing hydrogen peroxide prior to commencing your appointment 8. Proper PPE will be worn by hygienist including gown, mask, faceshield and gloves. Our temperature is also monitored throughout the day. 9. Aerosol generating procedures which include the use of ultrasonic equipment, air/water syringe and polishing will be limited 10. Surgically Clean Air Jade air purifiers will be installed to filter and clean the air as well as to maximize the rate of air exchange in the closed operatory from floor to ceiling We are very excited to be returning to work and we are very much looking forward to seeing you again! GET OUT YOUR FLOSS! WE ARE GETTING READY TO RE-OPEN ON AUGUST 4TH! And we have some exciting news!

Update: To our valued clients, even though we have been given the green light to re-open by the Provincial government, we are choosing not to do so at this time. We know that you can be asymptomatic and still be a carrier of COVID-19. Due to the fact that we donated all our PPE to the hospital, we are finding it difficult to find enough of it in large enough quantities to open safely for any length of time. We are still waiting for our new air purifiers to be delivered in order to provide you with the safest care possible. We are following public health as well as our governing body's guidelines on returning to practice to the letter and want you to know that the health and safety of our clients is our top priority. Thank you for your patience and we hope to see you soon! We miss you! (and we know your teeth miss us too!)
