Northumberland Fisheries Museum 11.12.2020

We're a bit late for Giving Tuesday, but we just wanted to reach out to let our followers know that we have a great new way to donate to the Museum! Your donations help us continue the important work we do here at the Northumberland Fisheries Museum, especially in this tough year. CanadaHelps.org is a great platform that helps Canadian charities process online donations, and you'll receive a tax receipt directly from them! https://www.canadahelps.org//northumberland-fisheries-mus/

Our friends at the Association of Nova Scotia Museums are looking for input from teachers on Teaching with Museums:

As a small community museum, we rely heavily on the support of volunteers to carry out the work that we do, from building maintenance to designing displays. We’d like to publicly acknowledge the huge contributions of two of our volunteers over the last year, Teri Corbin and Dwight MacDonald, who we presented with our Anchor Award for 2019-2020!

That’s a wrap! The museum is now closed for the season, and today we released our lobsters back into the Northumberland Strait. We’d like to offer a huge thanks to our fantastic summer staff who have gone above and beyond to take care of visitors (and our lobsters!) this season. We wish them all the best as they head back to school!

Today is the final day to check out the museum for this season!

Have you been waiting to visit the museum? We’re open 10-5 every day, but only for another week!

More moulting lobster content! Cali scared us this morning when we came in to find an upside down shell in the lobster tank, but they’d just moulted and turned this amazing neon yellow!

Lobster season has opened in LFA 25, which means more lobsters at the museum! Our friends at North Nova Seafoods had this blue charmer come in, and set it aside for us. Meet Picasso!

If you’re enjoying the Pictou waterfront today, but need a mask, we now have free masks available for the public. You’re welcome to come in and grab one.

It’s just a small sign, but it means big things for us.

And out he comes! As they come out of the shell, they don’t look like much, but after a few moments he’s back to looking like a lobster. He’s very soft right now, and will take in water to swell up, but over time his shell will harden back up!

We might not have as many lobsters as usual this year, but they sure are busy! Hector the blue lobster is moulting this morning in his tank!

Today was a bittersweet day for the museum, two of our most unusual lobsters laid eggs so we had to return them back to the Strait. We wish Merv and Lucky Lady all the best as they head out to continue their journey through motherhood!

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the museum will be closed today, July 30th. We will reopen tomorrow at 10 am!

Lobsters don’t have to wear masks, but we do! Wearing masks in indoor public spaces will soon be mandatory, which does include the museum. We encourage visitors to bring their own mask, but we have disposable masks available at the gift shop for a small fee.
