North West Animal Shelter 30.10.2020

FOR ADOPTION: RAMONDA is an approximately year and a half old female looking for relaxing home where she can blossom. Ramonda is another young female that came into our care with multiple litters of kittens. She arrived with Sparky (previously advertised), her 5 month old daughter as well as a brood of very young kittens. Ramonda moved to one of our experienced and welcoming foster homes to finish raising her babies. They are now weaned and Ramonda is ready to leave motherhoo...d behind and focus on herself. This young lady is very calm and enjoys interacting with people but prefers calm petting vs rowdy play or being carried about. Ramonda would be thrilled to be an only pet and we think her personality will continue to unfold when she’s no longer her surrounded by the other shelter cats. Ramonda gets along with calm, submissive felines but is not a fan of young, boisterous cats. She is also not at all willing to Cohesively live with a dog. In Ramonda’s perfect home she will be able to curl up beside her special human as they read, watch movies or sew. She was Indoor/outdoor prior to coming into our care and we could See her enjoying a sunny garden in the summer but Ramonda is also very content indoor only. She is spayed, vaccinated and up to date on parasite control. If you’ve been looking for an easy going companion for your quiet life apply today at www.NWAS.ca for a chance to meet RAMONDA. See more

FOR ADOPTION: KIKI is a beautiful, bold approximately 3 year old female looking for her own special family. This girl came into our care pregnant with her third litter in one year. She was an exceptional momma but now all her babies have been weaned and she is ready to focus on herself. Kiki is a very friendly, people Oriented girl that loves to be with her people. She’s cuddly and affectionate with a bit of an adventurous side. Kiki gets along well with other cats and is qui...et indifferent towards dogs (unless they rudely get into her space, then she will put them In her place).Kiki is very comfortable with children and loves them just as much as their grown up counter parts. Her adventurous side leads her to finding some creative hiding spaces and makes her a good candidate for an indoor/outdoor lifestyle. She could also be indoor only with a lot of stimulation. Kiki is spayed, vaccinated and up to date on parasite control. If you’ve been looking for a fun new friend apply today at www.NWAS.ca for a chance to meet KIKI See more

COVID-19 and the Northwest Animal Shelter In order to protect our staff and volunteers, and continue to be able to assist animals in need in the Bulkley Valley, we are restricting our intake of animals to the most urgent cases only. If you find an animal, please contact us via email at [email protected] or on our facebook page - and we will post a picture, the area where found, with your contact information. Hopefully the owner will be found. Please care for the lost animal as ...you would want someone to care for your lost pet! In the event that you absolutely cannot care for the animal, or if the animal is injured and requires medical care, we will do our best to help. The same applies if you have lost your pet - we will post a picture and where the pet was lost, with your contact information. The best way to assist your pet in returning home, however, is to have an ID tag with your contact information on their collar. If you need to surrender your pet, please email [email protected] so we can determine how and when we can help. We remain open for adoptions, with new protocols to protect our volunteers and the public with respect to viewings, etc. As usual, all visits to the shelter are by appointment only, after an application has been received. Please check out our website www.nwas.ca or facebook page for animals available for adoption, and fill out the online application. Not all animals are posted on the website or facebook page if we have approved applications on file, so tell us what you are looking for. Our adoption coordinator would then be in touch to review the process. Our goal remains to adopt animals into loving homes, so we can continue to take animals at risk into the shelter. Our SNAP (Spay Neuter Assistance) program remains in effect. Applications can be downloaded from our website (www.nwas. ca under programs) and emailed to [email protected]. Applications can also be picked up at Vet to Pet in Smithers. While we are still accepting applications to volunteer at the shelter, we are currently not able to provide training to volunteers in a manner that is safe to both the trainer and applicant. While we encourage you to fill in the application and thank you for your interest in helping out, new volunteers will not be accepted into the shelter environment until after the pandemic. We are still accepting applications for those interested in fostering animals, and encourage electronic submission of documents at this time. We thank you for your help and cooperation in allowing us to safely care for animals in the Bulkley Valley. Thank you to our wonderful staff and volunteers for their dedication, and our local veterinarians for all you do. Stay safe, and stay strong everyone! We will get through this together.

FOR ADOPTION: MOONCAKE is an approximately 6 month old female looking for a family that is as sweet and friendly as she is. Mooncake is a friendly, affectionate little lady that is great with people of all ages including children. She enjoys attention but will not pester you if you’re busy. Mooncake does enjoy a good play session but she is not what we would call a high energy cat. She is confident and respectful with other cats. She loves to play with other rowdy young cats ...but knows not to push the buttons of her older, calmer feline companions. Mooncake has had very little exposure to dogs but we think she would adjust to life with a calm and well meaning canine. She is very happy indoor only or could do well indoor/outdoor. Mooncake is spayed, vaccinated and up to date on parasite control. If you’ve been looking for a fun and friendly feline companion apply today at www.nwas.ca for a chance to meet MOONCAKE *adult cat adoption fee will apply*

FOR ADOPTION: MA is an approximately 2 year old female looking for a special family to shower her with affection. This sweet girl showed up a home in rural Houston with her litter of 7 kittens. After trying to locate owners with no luck the homeowner trapped Ma and her three surviving kittens (she assumes the remaining four were taken by the foxes that frequent her property before she was able to catch them ) Although she was trapped Ma is the farthest thing from feral. She’...s is an externally affectionate and interactive girl that loves people of all ages. She’s very good with other cats and was happily interacting with the dog in the home that found her unless he got too close to her kittens. We think Ma is going to fit in well in any kind and accepting household. She is quite content indoor only but could be indoor/outdoor in a very safe environment. Ma is now spayed, vaccinated and up to date on parasite control. If you’ve been looking for loving and friendly feline apply today at www.nwas.ca for a chance to meet MA See more

Handsome Harry wanted to pop in and wish everyone a Happy Caturday! He is a busy boy doing quality control in at Total Pet in Smithers. Harry has been at the store since August 31st and although he has had a little bit of interest the families either haven’t followed up with us or were just not the perfect match for him. He is an approximately one year old male that is amazing with other cats, learning to like dogs and shy of small Children. Harry needs an indoor only home due to his timid nature. If he sounds interesting to you stop into the store this weekend and say hello, you never know, you might just fall in love.

FOR ADOPTION: PIDGE is an approximately 18 month old beauty looking for her forever family. She came into care a few months ago with two 8 month old sons (Oreo and Oliver, now transferred to PGAR) and a swollen upper lip. We originally thought she had a cleft lip but a vet exam revealed that it was irritated and infected. She was treated with antibiotics and steroids (which we had to slowly wean her off of) and on her last vet check she was given the clear for adoption. Pidge... was living on the streets so we have no way of knowing for sure what happened to her but the vet figures she drank or ate something with trace amounts of poison which affected her mouth. Pidge is a sweet, gentle girl that will easily fit into most homes. She is great with other cats, especially males, and friendly with people. She really enjoys human company but is not a fan of being held for too long, she would rather lay beside you than be in your arms. Pidge has also been non reactive towards friendly dogs. She’s still got a bit of a playful side and is quite fun to have around. She could easily live indoor only or could be indoor/outdoor in the right environment. Pidge is spayed, vaccinated and up to date on parasite control. If you’ve been looking for a pretty kitty that isn’t too clingy apply today at www.NWAS.ca for a chance to meet PIDGE. See more

FOR ADOPTION: FIONA is an approximately 1 year old female with a story of strength and resilience to share. This little lady was bred on a very early heat cycle and produced a small litter of kittens. She was doing her best mothering them but was still being let outdoors in a dangerous area. She ended up brutally attacked by a loose dog. Her previous owners contacted us and together we got her into Babine Animal Hospital for emergency care and her kittens into a foster home w...here they could recover from the trauma of seeing mom attacked. Fiona’s left eye was punctured leaving it completely blind and her jaw was shattered. Emergency surgery left her with a lacerated tongue, feeding tube and a small hope of survival. After months of around the clock care at the vet clinic and then in an experienced foster home we are happy to say Fiona has survived and is ready to find a forever family. She is a very sweet girl that enjoys gentle handling and cuddles. We assume her near fatal dog attack was not the first time she’s had to defend herself as she will get very defensive if you play rough with her. She also holds a grudge against dogs and would prefer to never see one again. She could live with a very calm and gentle cat friend but will again get defensive if she feels threatened. We are looking for a quiet and mature indoor only household for our very special little survivor. Fiona does really enjoy children but we would like to see her in a home aged 10+ that will understand her need for strictly calm and gentle interactions. She is now spayed, vaccinated and up to date on parasite control. If you’ve been looking for a sweet little friend apply to day at www.nwas.ca for a chance to meet FIONA See more

FOR ADOPTION: FELIX is a fun, feisty approximately 1 year old Female looking for a loving family that will have her as the centre of their world. Felix is a friendly affectionate girl that is great with people of all ages. She likes cuddles and is still a very young, playful cat. Felix is going to be best suited to a home as an only pet. She is very dominant and food aggressive towards other cats and constantly on edge around dogs. With time she may adjust to the idea of livi...ng with a very calm respectful pooch but we do ultimately feel like she will be happiest as an only pet. Felix is very happy indoor only with lots of stimulation or she could do well indoor/outdoor in a safe environment. Felix is spayed, vaccinated, and up to date on parasite control. If you’ve been looking for a wonderful critter to be your one and only apply today at www.nwas.ca for a chance to meet FELIX See more

#adventuresinfostering For many years I've fostered dogs and cats for NWAS, sick and old animals, young ones with no mother, behavioural issues, injuries or just not doing well in a shelter environment. It's a great way to help out an animal in need without having the expense or long term time commitment of adoption. But for the first time I'm fostering a mother cat and her kittens from birth until they are ready for adoption. It's an interesting experience. We k...new Polly, the mother cat, was close to her due date and hoped to get her into my care in time for her to settle before the kittens came. Unfortunately that didn't happen. In the 4 hours between being brought into the shelter and me picking her up she produced 3 kittens. Already a bit shy, Polly went into defensive mode. For the first two weeks she growled and hissed every time I entered the room. Luckily she is a good mother and the kittens thrived. The first time I really saw one they were almost two weeks old and their eyes were starting to open. By three weeks they were regularly coming out of the small crate they were born in and starting to explore. Polly was much more relaxed by then and didn't mind me handling the babies when they were away from her. Now they are four weeks old, not interested yet in eating solid food but certainly ready to be out and about. Every day they get stronger and more coordinated, in another month they'll be ready to leave their mother and find a home of their own. The growth rate is hard to believe. See more
