Got low air flow from your vents or defrost? Not enough cooling or heating capacity? Have your vehicles cabin air filter inspected and replaced with a quality filter if needed. These cabin air filters can plug up and limit air flow through your heater core and evaporator core causing poor performance. Not only do they plug up with debris, but they also trap bacteria and other pollutants so it’s a good idea to replace these filters from time to time. This one in the image was... plugged solid. The customer was complaining about poor air conditioning performance and wanted an A/C performance test done. After confirming high/low side pressures and operation I new the system didn’t have enough air flow over the evaporator core as the running pressures were not within range and causing icing on the lines. Right away I jumped to the cabin air filter and came out with this in the image. After vacuuming the heater box out the best I could and installing a quality air filter the system operated better than he could ever remember. The customer was very happy and even happier about the low cost repair to his air conditioning concern. He was happy to know that his heater will perform better as well. Some vehicles don’t have a cabin air filter, but those are designed to keep debris out of the heater box assembly. This one wasn’t the worst I’ve seen in my career. I’ve had ones that had collapsed from the weight and all that debris plugged up both heating and cooling cores which required a complete heater box disassembly and cleaning. That can take anywhere from 4-10 hours of labour depending on the vehicle which is why it’s a good idea to inspect and replace this filter periodically. I have in the past encountered mold on the cabin air filter due to excessive humidity combined with neglect. Most of today’s vehicles are designed to filter the incoming air in to the cabin of your vehicle so have yours inspected for a clean bacteria free flow of fresh air. See more

Here’s another reason for regular oil changes. This filter came apart, the retaining mesh let go and the paper filter media had come out. There were pieces of this stuff in the oil. This filter could have completely blown the engine from oil starvation as it was ready to come right out and plug the oil galleries. This is just another reason for the 5000km and 3 month interval rule. The oil degrades and so does the filter. Mind you this was an out right failure of the filter. ...This is a very cheap filter and made in China. Wherever you get your oil changes, be sure to request a reputable brand and stay on top of your oil changes. That $12 dollar part can easily destroy a $10,000 dollar engine. At Norwood Automotive we only use made in USA oil filters and stay away from low quality units, the $2 dollar savings doesn’t out weigh the risks involved with sub par quality parts. See more

Oil changes, are they important? They are one of the most overlooked items in maintaining a vehicle. Here are 2 images, the first engine was neglected with cheap low quality oil. The second image ran a high quality oil and was changed frequently. The pictures speak for themselves. As you can imagine the second engine suffered catastrophic failure while the first one was getting an injector serviced. Each engine is designed to run on a specific weight oil and with their own s...pecific detergent package. This is why we at Norwood Automotive don’t use a generic bulk synthetic oil in all vehicles. We special order by engine requirements and will never pour in oil designed for other engines. There’s is no oil on the market that covers all makes and models. Wether you change your own oil or have a professional service your vehicle, request the proper weight and make sure it meets the engines requirements. I’ve seen to many engines destroyed from this overlooked service. Run the highest quality available and be frequent with oil change intervals. Some manuals tell you to change your oil every 10,000km, this may be fine in California where the temps don’t fluctuate and 75% of those km is highway driven. However our climate demands more frequent oil changes. An engine that is at -30 degrees will run very rich for the first few minutes with unburned fuel entering the oil past the rings, it’s unavoidable. Our fuel quality is also very poor compared to US fuel with a high quantity of ethanol. Ethanol really deteriorates engine oil, the acidic reaction combined with carbon deposits breaks down the oil and its ability to protect the rotating assembly. More engine manufacturers are building these engines with a smaller displacement and adding a turbo to boost HP. Now your not only working this little engine harder, but your also baking the oil in the turbo as their oil fed. A majority of these engines also hold less than 5 litres, which just increases the carbon/acid dilution. Also the key ingredient that prevents metal on metal contact has been removed from our oil due to the EPA. This additive is called ZDDP or just zinc. Most high performance racing oils have zinc in it and it’s also available as an additive, but that’s an entirely different novel. With this in mind we recommend oil change intervals at every 5000km or 3 months. As soon as the new oil is poured in to an engine it begins to break down from cross contamination. An oil change will always be cheaper than an engine replacement. Stay on top of it and your engine will last a lot longer. A high quality full synthetic oil change should cost around $75-$85 depending on the model. Broke down over 3 months of driving is only around $30/ month. That’s a small fee to pay to insure your engine is protected. See more
