Nourished Freedom 05.01.2021

I am listening to the book Come As You Are by @enagoski and this post is inspired by the chapter where she describes how self-criticism is a HUGE stressor and therefore reduces sexual pleasure, as well as worse health outcomes both physically and mentally. This time of year we ramp up with the hopes of more self discipline in order to make ourselves better. I’m all for heartfelt intentions and goals that support your happiness and well-being! But feeling inadequate stresses ...your body out. Feeling like a failure because the diet inevitably fails stresses your body out. Self-criticism is not the answer. What areas of your life are you inviting more curiosity and compassion into? Let me know For me, it’s my relationship with IG and posting to this page. I’m very much a person who posts spontaneously when I’m inspired..but the algorithms don’t like that! The diet industry is knocking and they want your MONEY. Diet companies (WW, Noom, Isogenix, etc.) depend on your insecurities and the diet failing for repeat business. What I want you to know is that 95%+ of diets fail in 5 years. That means that for the vast majority of people the weight that was lost will come back and for 66% of people, they will regain MORE weight than was lost. SO, instead of funding the $74 billion diet industry in 2021, reclaim your power by choosing... goals and intentions (if you are!) that ADD to the quality of your life instead of taking away things like carbs, chocolate, or cheese. Let’s commit to changing our mindset, NOT our measurements in 2021. Your body will change. It’s constantly changing whether you like it or not. And guess what? Your mindset around food and nutrition can change too. Are you stuck in the diet mentality? Are you concerned with what other people think of your weight? Perhaps it’s willpower that you rely on, that inevitably fails.... Cultivating a non-diet mentality, or the mindset of an Intuitive Eater will free you from the diet rollercoaster. SO, this January 1st, if you find yourself starting a new plan or program that has you counting macros, calories, or points, it’s a diet. If the intention is to shrink your body, follow food rules, and have cheat days, it’s a diet. Think back to last January? Is it same, same, but different name? Let’s leave diets in the past. You cannot fail at Intuitive Eating. You are not broken. You are not a diagnosis. You are the expert of your own life. For so long, we have looked outside of ourselves for the answers. What should I be eating? How much should I be eating? When should I stop eating? ... We SHOULD all over ourselves! When there are rules and expectations surrounding our eating and self care, we set ourselves up for feelings of failure, or not enoughness. What happens when those feelings arise? We want to hide away with our shame. And as shame researcher @brenebrown says: shame cannot survive being spoken. It cannot survive empathy. So, let’s talk about it. Let’s discover the answers to those questions that comes from an empowered, shameless place of self worth, self respect, and self care.
