QUIZ ANSWER. It's migration season for raptors, and here's a good one. The chunky wings and short tail point toward the "buteo" group of hawks rather than accip...iters (long tails), eagles (long and broad wings), or kites (slender and pointed wings). This bird is compact with a seemingly small body sizenot the powerful proportions of a Red-tailed Hawk, the most common buteo in the East. If the markings look nondescript on this bird, it's because it's an immature. Young Red-shouldered Hawks are streaky brown on white, but they are usually heavily streaked all over the breast, with very narrow pale bands on the tail and (usually) dark wingtips. Red-shouldered Hawks are also famous for showing translucent tawny crescents in the wingtips, a little like this birdalthough the crescents are typically brighter and more defined against dark wingtips. This bird also has a clean (unstreaked) throat and middle of the breasta distinctive feature of an immature BROAD-WINGED HAWK. This species is migrating across eastern North America by the tens of thousands right now. Learn more about them in our All About Birds species account: https://bit.ly/30eKKFF Thanks to Daniel Carr and the eBird/Macaulay Library archive for sharing this photo, taken over the weekend in Massachusetts.
