Wearing masks protect our health, but we must also protect those who can't speak for themselves. Inappropriately disposed single-use face masks, gloves, and other PPE pose serious risks to wildlife and the environment. Please remember to cut the strings and dispose of your masks in the garbage. Consider wearing reusable masks, if able. Please spread the word, so masks don’t become the new plastic bags!... A common misconception about plant-based diets is that they lack protein. Not only is this not true, but plant-based proteins provide amazing health benefits. Plant-based proteins tend to be lower in calories and fat than animal proteins, but higher in fiber and essential nutrients [1]. Eating legumes (beans and peas), nuts, seeds, whole grains, and other plant-based sources of protein is a win for your health and the health of the planet. If most of your protein comes f...rom plants, make sure that you mix up your sources so no essential components of protein are missing. The good news is that the plant kingdom offers plenty of options to mix and match! [2] Let us know in the comments what your favourite plant protein is! Just because something is ‘organic’, doesn't mean it is healthy. There is plenty of organic junk food out there. For example, many 'organic' multivitamins are organic, because their ingredient lists start like this: organic sugar, organic maltodextrin", and often contain a teaspoon or more of sugar per dose! They are essentially organic candies with added vitamins and minerals (sometimes organic, often not). Our products are organic, because we focus on using high q...uality organic food-based vitamins, minerals and herbs NOT because we fill them organic sugar or other junk (organic junk, by still junk). For added sweetness for select products, we use small amounts of organic maple sugar, a healthier alternative to white or refined sugar. We do not use synthetic ingredients (binders, fillers, coatings) that include ingredients such as shellac and silicone dioxide. That’s our organic difference. Learn more and shop with us online. What does Whole Food really mean? The simple message is we will achieve greater health by reducing the amount of processed foods we consume and instead, increasing as a percentage of our overall diet, the many foods that were produced just as Nature intended them. Even foods that can be considered healthy, such as tofu or fruit/vegetables juices are missing the original fibre of the whole foods they came from. - Owner & Founder, Nancy Smithers At Nova Scotia O...rganics, we often use a production approach called the Whole Herb Method, which uses the raw plant exactly as found in nature. Most of our herbal vitamins and supplements are simply whole herbs and plants dried using a gentle freeze-drying process, which preserves almost all of the nutritious properties of the original plant. Some formulations also add organic minerals, if it is called for. Learn more what Whole Food really means. Wondering about the difference between freeze-drying products versus dehydrating using heat? We prefer the former method when preparing our fruit, as it produces uncompromised results, including: Better preservation of nutrients Better flavour Better appearance with no browning... Pleasing lightly crunchy texture Longer self life, naturally, without the use of preservatives The freeze-drying process also reduces the weight of fruit, making our certified organic freeze-dried organic blueberry and pineapple snacks a convenient healthy snack for when you are on the go and school lunches. this is why we freeze-dry. For a growing number of consumers, buying locally produced food is important. It supports people and businesses in or near your community, stimulates the regional economy, and can promote sustainability and biodiversity. - Organic Council of Ontario Although rooted in the quaint traditions of local seaside farms, Nova Scotia Organics is more factory than farm. Nestled on the shore of the Atlantic Ocean, about 15 miles outside of Halifax, is the 300 acre farm weve called ...home since the mid-1990s. Kernel of Knowledge! We have been receiving inquiries about whether our products contain corn, as maltodextrin is listed on some of our product labels. Unfortunately, corn has become vilified. Conventional corn is often genetically modified and pesticide-laced. We dont currently use any corn or corn-based ingredients. That isnt to say that we wouldnt use corn, but we would only use organic corn, which is neither genetically modified nor conventionally farmed using pestic...ides and herbicides. The maltodextrin that we use is organic tapioca maltodextrin. Ideally, we do not want to use any maltodextrin and continue to look for opportunities to reduce or eliminate its use. However, it is currently necessary in the production and is used as little as possible. We understand your concern and appreciate you reaching out to us. Since inception in 1993, our mission has been to manufacture the highest quality certified organic whole food/herbal products, without GMOs, pesticides, herbicides, chemicals and synthetic ingredients. Our goal is to be a partner in reaching your health and wellness goals. If you have any questions, please dont hesitate to contact us. Have an a-MAIZE-ing long weekend and take care!

Dont Sneeze Your Weed Seeds! [1] Although dandelions have been given a bad rep and considered as an annoying weed, they are filled with many essential vitamins and minerals that can be used to relieve ailments [1], and support healthy digestion. There is confusion in what causes hay fever allergies. Most hay fevers are caused by wind-dispersed pollen, which comes from tiny but mighty wind-pollinated flowers, such as those present in grasses, mug worts, birches, and rag...weeds. Dandelion flowers are insect pollinated and shed airborne pollen, but cause limited allergies because the pollen is heavy and tends to fall straight down rarely reaching human noses. The fluff' is actually the seed, not the pollen, and does not cause allergies [1]. they might be dandy dandelions after all! Welcome to summer allergy season! Although its technically always allergy season, due to year-round culprits, such as dust mites, mold and pet dander, pollen allergens are seasonal [1]. The type of plant to blame varies by location. Trees are usually finished with their pollen-fest by late spring (e.g. Elm, Maple). That leaves grasses and weeds to trigger summer allergies [1]. Grass allergy season starts in late spring and summer. There are thousands of species of gr...ass in North America, but only a handful cause serious allergic reactions (e.g. Kentucky Bluegrass, Orchard Grass) [2]. Weed pollens are the most prolific allergens of all. A single ragweed plant, for instance, can produce a billion pollen grains in a season [2]. Looking for a natural remedy? Astragalus root extract has shown tremendous relief from seasonal allergies symptoms [3]. Stay tuned for more information in our next post! Nova Scotia Organics is the culmination of one womans (Nancy Smithers) passion to identify, source and combine organic ingredients with preventative health properties, and to manufacture whole food products with many of the problem solving capabilities of our original pantry and pharmacy: Nature. It is apparent that whole foods give us the maximum amount of original, natural, easily digested nutrients, and usually in combinations that aid digestion and absorption of thes...e nutrients. We often use a production approach called the Whole Herb Method, which uses the raw plant exactly as found in nature. This plant preparation contains all the inherent constituents of the plant, including the natural buffers, which help protect the body from overdose, toxicity and dangerous interactions. In contrast to many unregulated techniques that isolate a single biochemical constituent, we use the entire herb plant, allowing it to work synergistically to create the positive health effect Nature intended. Its your body. Run it well. Photo credit: Monika Karaliunaite

Magic Mushroom takes on a whole new meaning! Did you know mushrooms are the only vegetable that contains Vitamin D, naturally? Up to 50% of the worlds population is deficient in this essential nutrient, in part due to inadequate sun exposure, wearing sunblock outside, and eating a Western diet low in good sources of this vitamin. Source: @healthline There are two main forms of Vitamin D, these are ergocalciferol (D2), which is the form produced by plants when exposed t...o UV light (e.g., mushrooms), and cholecalciferol (D3) the biologically active form produced in humans and animals when skin is exposed to sunlight. While both types help you meet your vitamin D requirements, research suggests that vitamin D2 is less effective than vitamin D3 at raising blood levels of Vitamin D. To maintain adequate vitamin D levels, make sure to regularly eat plenty of foods rich in vitamin D, such as mushrooms, and/or spend some time in the sun. If you take supplements, consider Vitamin D3. Learn more and shop with us online. Vitamin D is more than a sunshine vitamin. Vitamin D3 plays an important role in the central nervous system and mood disorders; it's involved in the metabolism of neurotransmitters, such as acetylcholine (healthy development of memory), dopamine (pleasure hormone) and serotonin (happy hormone). Who doesn't want more of those? Even beyond these basic quality of life attributes, Vitamin D also helps maintain normal blood levels of calcium for healthy bones and teeth, and ...phosphorus.
