From Island Parent, somehow I missed this review until now: "This outstanding title features a comprehensive profile of the Great Bear Rainforest, with hands-on activities, engaging anecdotes and adventures, and abundant photographs and information on not only the plants and animals that thrive in the rainforest, but the deadly threats and overwhelming challenges that they face in this age of pollution, habitat destruction, and climate change. It must be said, however, that Nowhere Else on Earth is not your conventional kids’ green science book: Vernon is smart, strong-willed, and a passionate optimist who firmly believes in the power of an individual, no matter their age, to make a profound, lasting, and above all positive change; reading Nowhere Else On Earth, it’s hard not to feel the same." Book review in BC Studies: The region is now the site of a controversial oil pipeline slated to run straight through this rainforest to the Pacific Ocean, where oil tankers will transport the bitumen from the Alberta tar sands to Asia. There is no better time to assess the social and ecological significance of this region. Nowhere Else on Earth: Standing Tall for the Great Bear Rainforest, carries on this conversation in a nuanced way.
Thanks to the Bolen Books Prize Juror Citation: Our finalists have all taken us on memorable journeys to engaging locales and time periods. But the journey by words and photographs to the Great Bear Rainforest in Caitlyn Vernon’s Nowhere else on Earth: Standing Tall for the Great Bear Rainforest is also awe inspiring, educational, entertaining and motivational. Her descriptions of the plants and animals that call this place home inspire awe. Her explanations of the natura...l processes that are occurring are informative and easy to understand and beautifully illustrated with photographs by many photographers. Stories from her own experiences and from others including First Nations persons entertain and inform. And when readers of all ages have finished reading her book, they will be motivated to take action to do their part to protect this beautiful, magical place. See more
