This award recognizes an organization or individual who has made outstanding contributions to publishing, promoting, or supporting the literature of Northwestern Ontario. Cathy has funded the Bill MacDonald Prize for Prose in NOWW's Annual Writing Contest, encouraging writing that is set in our region. Cathy has also been a generous supporter of NOWW's general programming. The Kouhi award, named in honour of poet Elizabeth Kouhi, recognizes a writer who has a significant history of contributing to the literature of Northwestern Ontario. Recipients are evaluated on the breadth and depth of their full body of work. This year's recipient was Joe Fiorito. Born in Fort William, Joe has been honoured for his work as a journalist and writer. He is the author of eight books, including two collections of poetry. Joe's memoir, The Closer We are to Dying, is a gritty narrative about his father and growing up in Westfort. As one of Joe's nominators wrote, "[He] is an original, compelling, contemporary Canadian voice who has produced a major body of work and who, I hope, will continue to write and open our eyes to Canadian realities." Thank you for your dedication to writing and writers across Northwestern Ontario.
