In BC, we are rightly proud that over 95% of our electricity generation comes from clean energy sources. As great as this is, electricity is a small portion of our total energy supply, so our total energy picture isn't as "clean" as it might first appear. But with new and increasingly cost effective technologies like electric vehicles and air source heat pumps, there is potential to shift more and more of our energy use to our green electricity. Will this be the next opportunity for growth of renewable energy over the coming decades?

Musselroe Bay in Tasmania is not only the site of many summer camping trips with friends in my university days, but also the largest wind farm in Tasmania. Conventional wisdom has maintained that wind turbines don't have enough inertia to help stabilise the frequency of the electrical grid. However, a new pilot project at the Musselroe Wind Farm aims to disprove that notion. It will be interesting to see the results of this test, as it will allow us to keep pushing the limits of how much wind energy can be integrated into the existing electrical grid. http://ow.ly/kShG30iPKJQ

The results of the first renewable energy auction in Alberta have (as expected) broken records for the lowest wind energy prices in Canada at $37/MWh (with wind and solar costs still in a downward trend). Contrast with the unit energy cost of $44/MWh for the recently approved Site C Hydro project (assuming no further budget overruns). Political arguments about carbon taxes, Paris agreement or subsidy programs seem to miss the bigger picture that simple economics will be changing our energy landscape in the coming years, with or without government support. https://lnkd.in/evxQ6ZQ

Alberta and Saskatchewan are making big moves to dramatically increase their renewable energy supply over the coming 15 years. It was great to be at this conference, and we are looking forward to learning more about how this transformational change will happen.
