As we said, it’s been a time of transitions... We are beyond sad to say goodbye to our dear Melissa, who was the centre director at Mawio’mi Child Care Centre and a practicum advisor at the college. Not only that, but Melissa began her ECE career at the NSCECE Lab Schools 13 years ago - starting as an educator, moving into the Assistant Director role, inclusion coordinator, and then Director. Those who know Melissa know of her love for Harry Potter, cats, and of course chee...se. Melissa has been a beautiful soul who encouraged and pushed those around her to be their best. She was an incredible mentor for her team and built intentional and strong relationships with the children, families, community, educators, faculty, and students. In the words of J.K Rowling, It’s important to remember that we all have magic inside us. And Melissa, your heart is FILLED with magic. You will be so missed. Please feel free to share your farewells and well wishes in the comments as we wish Melissa well on her next steps in the field.

It’s been a month of transitions - including our own at NSCECE. We are so sad to say goodbye to Joelle, who was the centre director at Leeds Street Child Care Centre, and a practicum advisor, GWE advisor, and faculty member in the post-secondary classroom. Not only that, but Joelle began her ECE career as a student at NSCECE (back when it was St. Joseph’s College of Early Childhood Education). Joelle has been an incredible mentor for her team and was always ready with words... of encouragement for families, children, students, and colleagues. Please feel free to share your farewells and well wishes in the comments as we wish Joelle well on her next steps in the field.

We asked our ECE community for advice as schools reopen tomorrow across the province. Brittany, one of our labschool Early Childhood Educators shared the following: Leading up to the re-opening of Child Care Centres, I was so anxious, nervous and feeling frustrated with, what I felt was, lack of preparedness. I was so concerned about the children and their social-emotional wellbeing. Getting back into the swing of things, all those fears went away. The children showed us h...ow resilient, brave, capable, and competent they are. One piece of advice I would give is not to go in thinking the worst. Go in with the belief and understanding that children are capable. Stay calm through the challenges. Learn from them. It may not be perfect right away, but we are all learning as we go! #ComeForTheChildrenStayForTheCareer #earlychildhoodeducation #backtoschool #capableConfidentCurious

We asked our ECE community to share their words of wisdom about reopening. Susan, an ECE and faculty in both our ECA and diploma programs shared this: Having been in a Centre since the re-opening I am amazed and awe struck at how creative, positive and eager Early Childhood Educators have been returning to work. They truly have shown me how important a role they play in these children and families lives. We have the privilege of working with these young people in such a c...rucial learning stage and development of their lives. While the world may be in a race to find answers and a vaccine these young children truly deserve the best experiences and normalcy during these uncertain times. Children come in ready to play, explore and discover with their sense of wonder, and our role is to support them. So to our wonderful world of Early Childhood Educators, Families and children I am truly proud to be part of such an amazing piece of our society #ComeForTheChildrenStayForTheCareer #EarlyChildhoodEducation #backtoschool

With schools opening next week, there are still several unknowns. We remember those feelings well, from earlier this year when childcare centres reopened. With months of experience now, we’re feeling confident in ourselves as educators and in the children we work with. The children have been incredibly resilient and adaptable, and we have designed our classrooms to continue to meet their needs for play, learning, and connection. ECEs- what’s your best advice for school te...achers who are welcoming students back to their classrooms this fall? #EarlyChildhoodEducation #ComeForTheChildrenStayForTheCareer #COVID19 #backtoschool

{Capable, Confident, and Curious in the time of COVID-19} Our showcase continues, demonstrating young children's resiliency and adaptability during a global pandemic. We know children to be capable, confident, and curious, and we are seeing this emerge in play related to health and safety, as in the story below from Akerley Childcare Centre: Washing Baby’s Hands... When C left the bathroom after washing her hands she went to get her stroller with her baby doll. C brought her baby doll over to the sink. C carefully put one of the baby's hands under the running water and waited a few seconds; then switched to wash the baby’s other hand. C turned off the tap and put the baby back into the stroller. C is showing understanding of the new frequent hand washing practices. She is demonstrating awareness of personal hygiene and engaging in a caretaker role for her baby doll. #Covid19 #ComeForTheChildrenStayForTheCareer #capableconfidentcurious #makinglearningvisible #earlychildhoodeducation #playbasedlearning

{Capable, Confident, and Curious in the time of COVID-19} We continue to see examples of resiliency and understanding in our youngest citizens as they engage in meaningful learning opportunities during a global pandemic. Last week, at Mawio’mi Child Care Centre, the Early Childhood Educators in the preschool classroom provided homemade masks for the dramatic play area. This particular child wanted to role play with the mask on the baby, saying, "We need to keep the baby saf...e!" A discussion was had about the purposes of mask wearing. Some children shared to keep themselves safe, others said to keep others safec and one child shouted, "because of germs!" This just shows how understanding of the virus and resilient children are. #COVID19 #ComeForTheChildrenStayForTheCareer #capableconfidentcurious #makinglearningvisible #EarlyChildhoodEducation
