I’m sharing this post from four years ago. The terminology might have changed (adult guardianship is now legally called representation) but the importance of the topic certainly hasn’t. This was written by a mother with two young adult sons and I am sharing with her permission. It spoke to me deeply as it connected so much with my own life at the moment that I wanted to share. I think every parent of a young adult with special needs will be able to identify with her thoughts ...to some degree. Here's the other thing - as part of that balance of giving that continued support that they so desperately need while letting them grow in independence where it's safe, I believe that the guardianship conversation is something ALL parents need to have, whether with their spouses or just with themselves. Guardianship may or may not be the right answer for your family member but UNLESS AND UNTIL you gather information and carefully consider the options, you will never know. Unless, of course, you find out the hard way and I would never wish that on any of us. Please contact me with any questions.
