It's the International Day against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia, and the NSNDP is reaffirming its commitment to advancing queer and trans rights. Let's celebrate love and diversity so that everyone feels safe in our communities.

Nova Scotia workers will need sick days after this wave of COVID-19 too. We need to make sick days permanent for all employees in the province. #nspoli #nsndp #paidsickdays Tell us how permanent sick days would make a difference for you: https://act.nsndp.ca/survey/sick-days-tell-your-story/

The Liberal government must work more closely with child care centres and early childhood educators to ensure the sector can operate safely and provide families with the care they need during the current wave of COVID-19. #nspoli https://www.halifaxexaminer.ca//child-care-centres-in-dir/

This is why sick days need to be permanent and in the Labour Standards Code. The @NSNDP will continue to fight to make sure every employee in the province can stay home when they're sick. #nspoli #nsndp https://www.halifaxtoday.ca//workplaces-major-contributors

"We've heard for months that COVID-19 could make its way into our schools, but now that it has it appears that the Liberal government didn’t properly prepared students, parents, and teachers for that possibility." - Claudia Chender MLA Parents and teachers can’t be left in the dark on COVID-19 response in schools: https://www.nsndp.ca/parents-and-teachers-cant-be-left-dark #nspoli

To celebrate 40 years since Alexa McDonough was elected leader of the Nova Scotia NDP we are running a contest. Check it out! Deadline to enter is tomorrow!

As cases of COVID-19 affect two Nova Scotia schools, the need for guaranteed, paid sick days is clear. Dozens of students in two schools in Dartmouth are being instructed to get tested and isolate for 14 days. Students in these schools have been sent home with little notice and for many of them that will mean parents will have to be at home too, said NDP Education and Early Childhood Development spokesperson Claudia Chender. Child care does not happen organically. It happens when parents, frequently women, rearrange their lives to find a solution for their families. That solution is harder to find when people don’t have paid sick days and have to choose between a day's pay or staying home. https://www.nsndp.ca/sick-days-needed-respond-covid-19-case

"Nova Scotians should be concerned about Premier Stephen McNeil’s decision to prorogue the legislature given the lack of transparency around his government’s $228-million COVID stimulus program, says a Saint Mary’s University economics professor. We need clear transparency on where this money is going," said Ather Akbari, an expert in labour economics. "Nova Scotians deserve to know if this money is being fairly distributed and who are the middle people, the companies being... paid? ... "Pointing to the fact that the legislature has met for only 13 days this year, NDP House leader Claudia Chender accused the McNeil Liberals of blocking Nova Scotians from asking questions through their elected representatives. Chender also said the soon to be resigned premier "clearly does not want to be questioned on his own record. https://www.saltwire.com//economist-questions-proroguing-/

HALIFAX -- Alexa McDonough made the following statement to mark the 40th anniversary of her election as Leader of the NSNDP on November 16, 1980, making her the first woman elected leader of a major political party in Canada: I’ve always felt deeply indebted to the people of Halifax and of Nova Scotia for the trust they placed in me to represent them. When I was elected leader of the Nova Scotia NDP in 1980, my goal was to build a better province where equity was a given and... choosing a woman leader would no longer be shocking news. I’m proud of the work the NSNDP has done for the province and for women in leadership. Since I was leader, both Helen MacDonald and Maureen MacDonald have led the party and today our provincial caucus is 80 per cent women. A diversity of voices at the table builds strength and ensures we continue to move forward, building a province where people can expect something better from their government. In her almost 30 year political career, Alexa McDonough, OC, ONS, led both the Provincial and Federal NDP and held elected office as MLA (Halifax Chebucto/Fairview) and MP (Halifax).

Reason #10 Alexa is an NDP icon. As federal leader she led the NDP in a Maritime breakthrough, winning 6 seats in NS and 2 in NB, and impressive second-place finishes in other Maritime seats. In 1997, the party won six of the eleven federal seats in Nova Scotia. Her victory galvanized support for the provincial NDP, creating the electoral base from which we formed the first NDP government east of Ontario. #nspoli #AlexasLegacy
