Reminder to hikers: Construction of a new trail is ongoing at Cape Split Provincial Park. Please do not enter the new trail. Due to wet conditions, we ask hikers to stay off the new trail to allow the trail to firm up over the coming months. The existing trail to Cape Split remains open. Please pack in and pack out.

Thank you to everyone who rediscovered Nova Scotia provincial parks this season. We welcomed over 247,000 visitors at our camping parks and over 1 million at our day use parks from June to mid October. With COVID-19 restrictions, 96% of campers came from Nova Scotia and 4% from other parts of Atlantic Canada. We want to thank visitors for following public health measures to keep everyone safe while enjoying time in nature. The end of the operational season means that provincial park facilities, such as washrooms, are now closed for the season but you can continue visiting parks to enjoy walking and other activities. We look forward to 2021, it’s never to early to start planning your next visit. https://novascotia.ca/news/release/?id=20201118001

Parks are for everyone. That’s why we’re committed to accessible and inclusive facilities and experiences at provincial parks and beaches in all corners of Nova Scotia. Adaptive equipment was available at six different provincial beaches this season through partnerships with municipalities. Barrier free fishing and picnicking were added at Lake O Law Provincial Park thanks to our partnership with the Margaree Salmon Association. Parking, washrooms, park offices and picnic shelters continue to be upgraded with accessible features. A major renovation was completed to the washroom facility at The Islands Provincial Park, which now provides barrier free and self-contained private washrooms for campers

In case you missed it, the Province recently announced the designation of two new Provincial Parks under the Provincial Parks Act. Barra Forest-MacNeils Vale Provincial Park and St. Marys River Provincial Park are two unique parks which add greater protection and recreational opportunities in Nova Scotia. These two parks contribute to the province’s land protection goals as outlined in the Parks and Protected Areas Plan. Barra Forest-MacNeils Vale Provincial Park is a relati...vely large area (733 ha) located in Victoria County that was donated to the province through the Nature Conservancy of Canada. It includes a portion of shoreline along Bras d’Or Lake in the well-known Maskells Harbour. St. Marys River Provincial Park is a series of properties in both Pictou and Guysborough counties along the West and East St. Marys Rivers, totalling 3,214 ha. The St. Marys River is one of the longest rivers in Nova Scotia and has one of the last remaining populations of Atlantic salmon. It’s home to several vulnerable species of birds and provides habitat for nationally threatened and provincially vulnerable Wood Turtle. It also includes a floodplain and old-growth forests. The public are welcome to enjoy these lands, knowing that services are not provided at this time, and the Provincial Parks Act and regulations must be followed. As always, safety is your responsibility. https://parks.novascotia.ca/content/news See more
