Juvenile Coho salmon have now emerged from the gravels. Earliest sightings were around a month ago, and with the warm weather they have now been spotted in many of our salmon bearing streams on the North Shore. Did you know juvenile Coho have taller bodies and very large anal and dorsal fins? These adaptations make it very energy costly to hold and feed in fast water. Instead, you'll typically find Coho fry in still water or back eddy features. Where their adaptations allow ...them to be the most competitive species in those environments, while conserving the most amount of energy. They also love cover and aren't afraid of the shade. Coho fry are also typically darker in color when compared to other salmonid fry and have orange fins. Their anal and dorsal fins also have a white outline. This is often the easiest way to tell them apart. #cohosalmon #cohofry #builditandtheywillcome #northvancouver #streamkeepers #largewoodydebris
