Indigenous women and girls are five times more likely to experience violence than any other population in Canada, and this violence tends to result in more serious harm. From 2001 to 2014, the average rate of homicides involvin...g Indigenous female victims was four times higher than homicides involving non-Indigenous female victims. Indigenous women make up 16% of all female homicides victims, and 11% of missing women, even though Indigenous people make up 4.3% of the population of Canada. Assembly of First Nations, 2021 SHARED FROM FINDING OUR POWER TOGETHER: May 5th is the National day of awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. "Today we remember and honor all those relatives that have gone missing and all those relatives that have never been reported due to the mistrust in our systems and the dehumanization of our people" (Navajo Nation Delegate, Anber Kanazbah Crotty). In Canada, Indigenous women and girls are five times more likely to experience violence than any other population and this violence tends to result in more serious harm. On June 3, 2019, the Final Report from the National Inquiry on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls was released. In that report, the Inquiry made 231 Calls for Justice. It also concluded that the acts of violence against Indigenous women, girls, and gender-diverse people in Canada constitute genocide.
