Have you ever wondered what your professors are doing while on sabbatical? Dr. Jamie Murton (Department of History) is spending his sabbatical year doing work that historians love: writing and researching. So far this year he has submitted an article for peer review in the journal Histoire Sociale/Social History, as part of a special issue on markets and marketing in Canada. He is currently revising his manuscript Canadians and their Natural Environments: Survival from 20,000... Years Ago to the Present, which will be published by Oxford University Press. Dr. Murton has also recently been appointed an Associate of the Wilson Institute for Canadian History at McMaster University. He joins a network of fellows and associates who are noted for pushing the field of Canadian history in exciting new transnational directions. In the fall he applied for and received a Nipissing Internal Research Grant, which will fund travel to Victoria in June to receive intensive training in research methods in the Digital Humanities. This is part of his new research project, How Canadians Ate: The History of Non-market and Market Means of Subsistence in Canada to the Second World War. He also has plans to eventually develop a course that would teach research methods in digital history to Nipissing students. For the remainder of his sabbatical Dr. Murton plans to submit more journal articles and create a new course for 2020-21 on the environmental history of capitalism. See more
