What a fun time we had on the ice with our Advanced and Development skaters during the Youth Virtual Speed Skating Challenge! New challenging races, we all enjoyed the team sprint and the loud cheering! Congrats to our Advanced skater William that won a special swag package from Speed Skating Canada | Patinage de vitesse Canada! #teamnunavut #nuspeedskating #iqaluit #Nunavut

Unfortunately, as you are aware, Covid has made its way to Iqaluit. Dr. Patterson announced today that we are in Stage 4 and the City has shut down all recreation facilities until further notice. This means that we have no speedskating for now. Please listen to the GN press conference on Monday for updates and most importantly, STAY SAFE! #WashYourHands #WearAMask #SocialDistance

NSSA long time benefactor, and great friend, John Sands, sadly passed peacefully recently. Let us introduce you to a great man and athlete that always supported our club over the years. JOHN VALANCE SANDS 1933 - 2020 From his humble beginnings in Saskatoon, John grew to become a very successful athlete and businessman. As a young boy, he excelled in athletics: tennis, football, golf and especially speed skating where he represented Canada twice in the Olympics Games: Squaw V...alley 1960 and Cortina d'Ampezzo 1956 and for 12 years held the Canadian record in the 500m. John built several successful businesses that still thrive today. His wife Micheline of 57 years survives him along with their three children and four grand-daughters. John was a great friend and helper to many. John (87) passed peacefully in his home on December 31, 2020, following a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. John Sands was also a great supporter of Speed Skating Nunavut and made many donations to our sport over the years. We are honoured to receive a final donation from John Sands which will go towards the registration fees of any athletes whose parents cannot afford the fee. Our thoughts and prayers goes to his dear wife Micheline and his family. The Nunavut speed skating family lost a great friend but will ensure that your legacy will be remembered. RIP John. Here’s a nice 2020 memory about David Gilday who lived with his family in Iqaluit for many years and has been a wonderful speed skating coach, official and overall supporter of speed skating, locally and beyond for many years.

Ice practice update: Saturday is a go! We are thankful for the stringent measures the arena already have in place that allows us to continue our ice practices. We completely understand if you are uncomfortable to bring your child(ren) in. We also welcome anyone to wear a mask on the ice as extra diligence, but just like last week, they are not mandatory on the ice at this time. See you at practice Saturday morning!... Please follow this page for any updates and please ask any new speed skating families to do so as well! Take care!
