ATTENTION NES FAMILIES Supplemental Student/Parent/Staff Handbook: COVID-19 Restart Response (Please note: this handbook will be emailed to you as a pdf and w...ill be available on the SD49 website as well): Dear parents, guardians, students, and staff of NES, We believe it is important to the mental health and well being of all involved that we share and explain all safety protocols and procedures in an effort to reduce anxiety and keep all parties informed. In an effort to communicate openly the expectations around school opening we have shared out the protocol document that has been developed through consultation with staff at NES. This document is informed by, and meets or exceeds the safety recommendations outlined in COVID-19 Public Health Guidance for K-12 School Settings published by the BC Center for Disease Control and the BC Ministry of Health. As the school environment is a dynamic one, this is an evolving document and is intended to inform best practice, taking into consideration that circumstances may develop requiring flexibility and compassion on the part of the school team. The school reserves the right to adjust its response as necessary. We will take all Health and Safety measures that are within our control in School District 49, and we promote following all the health and safety guidelines to reduce the risk of exposure to COVID-19. School District 49 (Central Coast) supports the Hereditary Chief information checkpoints and will support staff and families in self-isolation following a return to the valley. However, we recognize that it is out of our control what individuals choose to do outside of school time and cannot guarantee the school setting will not have individuals present who have recently travelled outside of Bella Coola. There will be procedures in place to minimize the risk of spreading any illness in SD49, but minimized or not, there will always be a risk of exposure. As always, I am open to and welcome your feedback. Sincerely, Kevin Gianakos and the dedicated teaching and support staff of NES [email protected] 250-982-2193 School Supplies Your child will be provided with a Ziploc bag that contains any school supplies they may require. This bag will have their name on it, will not leave the building, and will not be shared between students. Schedule The following is the schedule for the student groups coming to school. You have been or will be contacted soon to identify your child’s grouping. Bell Schedule 9:00 - first bell 10:00-10:15 recess 12:00-12:30 Lunch 2:30 dismissal **Please note the week of June 1-5 will be half days with early dismissal at 12:00. The symptoms of COVID-19 are similar to other respiratory illnesses including the flu and common cold. They include: Fever, chills, cough, shortness of breath, sore throat and painful swallowing, stuffy or runny nose, loss of sense of smell, headache, muscle aches, fatigue, loss of appetite. If your child exhibits any of these symptoms they should stay home from school for 14 days. Please ensure that your alternate emergency contact understands that they will be called and asked to pick up your child in the event that they become ill while at the school and we cannot reach you. You are asked to send a water bottle or plastic cup for your child to drink from. Water fountains at the school are turned off and covered. You are asked to send a lunch each day your child is coming to school as we are not currently able to supply a food program. Student expectations: Students are asked to bring their work to school and be prepared to learn. Students will be asked to be diligent in maintaining physical distancing to the best extent possible as well as limiting physical contact and practicing regular hand-washing. Students who demonstrate an inability to follow these requirements will be assigned to remote learning. Staff expectations: Staff are expected to follow SD 49 and school safety protocols. This includes bleaching front door handles upon entry, regular hand-washing, maintaining social distancing to the greatest extent possible. All staff are expected to sign in every day. By signing they are acknowledging that they have read the school district safety protocol and have done a daily personal health assessment. As part of our ongoing education around COVID-19 staff will strive to educate students at every opportunity on the importance of being respectful of social distancing and limiting physical contact. Bussing: As bus capacity is limited to 12 students, we are asking for your assistance in providing transportation if you can. Buses will follow their pre-Covid routes. Students should be at their regular bus stop at the time indicated on the attached bus schedule. Masks will be made available on the bus for any student who wishes to wear one. There will be zero tolerance for inappropriate, unsafe, or disrespectful behaviour on the bus. Students who are unable to follow directions of the bus driver will not be permitted to ride the bus. Parents will be responsible for transportation if they wish their child to attend. Student seating will be limited and assigned. If you indicated that you will be driving your child to and from the school, please be aware that there may not be a space available on the bus. While waiting at their stop students are asked to maintain social distancing and limit physical contact to the greatest extent possible. There will be 2-metre markings along the fence at the NES bus gate to indicate appropriate spacing for after school pick up. Students will be met at the bus by a staff member and reminded about social distancing, limiting physical contact, cough/sneeze etiquette, and hand-washing expectations each day when they arrive at school. Supervision (before school, breaks, after school) : Students will be at the school before the bell rings. As such there will be supervised outside time each morning. The playground structure will remain closed during school hours. The east field and forest, and basketball court will be supervised and open to students. The basketball court will be limited to 4 students at a time (2 per hoop). Students will eat lunch outside on the east field (by the basketball courts). Hand-washing will be conducted before exiting the building. In inclement weather students will eat lunch in their classrooms. Entering the school / classroom expectations: Access to the school will be strictly controlled. All exterior doors will remain locked throughout the day. Visitors to the school are asked to call and schedule before arriving at the school and to enter through the front door. Staff will have to let you in. Visitors must check-in at the office. Students will line up outside, at their assigned area and asked to adhere to lines indicating appropriate distancing. They will be guided into the classroom by staff and asked to line up to wash their hands. Markings on the floor will indicate appropriate spacing for lining up at the sink. There will be assigned seating and students will keep their belongings with them at their desks. Desks will be spaced to ensure social distancing to the greatest extent possible. Students and staff are asked to wash their hands upon entry to any room. Hand sanitizer will be available in all classrooms Students will have access to the laptop that has been assigned to them while at school and sanitizing wipes will be available to wipe computers down after use. If students or staff become sick while at school: Any staff feeling ill will immediately report this illness to their supervisor and will then be dismissed for the remainder of the day. Return to work will follow district guidelines. Throughout School District 49 there will be zero-tolerance with regards to attendance during an illness. If a student is showing signs of illness, staff will move the sick student from room immediately and take them to the sick room. The student will be required to wear a mask and staff will monitor them from the hallway. A physical barrier (opaque plastic) will be placed over the doorway. The HSC office has been identified as a secondary isolation room, with one staff washroom identified as a secondary isolation washroom. The site supervisor will be informed immediately and parents will be contacted to come pick up their child. If you cannot be reached, your emergency contacts will be called and asked to pick up your child. In the event transportation cannot be arranged the school administrator will transport the student home in a district vehicle. The student will be required to wear a mask and a makeshift barrier will be constructed between the passenger and driver. The classroom the student was in will be cleared, and an alternate classroom will be used for students remaining. Families of all students in the classroom will be informed there was an illness suspected on site so they have the opportunity to make an informed decision on whether or not to pick up their child. All rooms and vehicles affected will be prioritized for deep cleaning by janitorial staff. Behaviour: There will be limited tolerance for inappropriate and unsafe behaviour, including disrespecting social distancing requests and physical contact. Students will be spoken to once about physical contact incidents. Staff will make every attempt to provide education about the importance of limiting physical contact and safe practices. Students that are unable to demonstrate an ability to limit physical contact while at school will continue with remote learning. In the event of a major behavioural incident, the staff in charge of the students at the time will immediately notify the site supervisor. Students will be made safe either by being removed from the situation or removing the distressed student. The site supervisor will attempt to de-escalate the student. In the event of significant repeated outbursts and/or breaches of safety protocol, the student will continue with remote learning only. Janitorial /Cleaning: The school custodian will be responsible for deep cleans of accessed classrooms. Deep cleans will happen twice a day during student’s lunch break and after school. The following items will be disinfected during these deep cleans: All desks and chairs Counters, taps, sinks Doorknobs, push zones (areas around handles etc), light switches Student washrooms Some support staff have been trained to carry out high touch cleaning. High touch cleanings will happen at 10:00 and 2:00 daily.
