Pancake filled crepe anyone? With maple syrup, sugar and jam? It’s 100% delicious if you ask my 7 year old, the creator of this dish :) And it had to be his favourite maple syrup from @winterdancedogsledtours that we bought at the @haliburton_farmers_market. ... #crepe #pancake #breakfast #maplesyrup #brekkie

It’s that simple. Eating chips brings us joy. So why should we deny ourselves that? We eat with our stomachs, our minds and our hearts. Don’t deny yourself the pleasure food can bring, from taste, texture and flavour, to the social and emotional aspect of it All foods fit, and it’s perfectly fine to eat chips. Listen to your bodies. These little ones did. And even though that’s what they set out to do, they didn’t finish the two bags. They stopped when they were satisfied. An...d that’s the best part. They listened to their bodies. Ate when they felt like it, stopped when their tummies and brains told them to #allfoodsfit #chips #potatochips #layschips @layscanada #kidsofinstagram @lays #intuitiveeating

Which one of these is inedible? The yellow one, amanita citrina (false deathcap). Although some sources class this mushroom as edible, other class it as inedible or even mildly toxic. This conflicting information, combined with the fact that it looks similar to a deadly poisonous amanita phalloides (deathcap) mean it should stay off the menu. My parents have been foraging mushrooms for decades now, and have taught me to never risk it. Only pick the ones that have no poisonous... lookalikes, and the ones I am sure I know what they are My dad is planning on making a mushroom stroganoff with our loot. DIY donut decorations Because it’s okay to play with our food before eating it. We eat with all of our senses, after all And this is why I think involving kids in the process of making food can inspire them to explore more foods and try new things... #playwithyourfood #donuts #doughnuts #sprinkles #pinksprinkles

Lemon thyme BBQ trout I just recently discovered @preschoice frozen citrus blend: frozen slices of lemon and lime with peel I love it for flavouring (and cooling) my water, but I also use it in cooking. I dipped these ones in melted butter, and put on fish. Because the citrus was frozen, the butter hardened, which was great, as it then gradually softened and oozed all over the fish as it was baking, flavouring it beautifully ... We often take the little things in our life for granted. And it’s precisely those small things that can make us happy Little things that I have done this month: - Watched a sunset - Laughed wholeheartedly... - Explored nature - Mindfully enjoyed that first sip of my morning tea - Watched my boys laugh and play - Felt the softness of moss with my bare feet - Paddle boarded in the early morning on an calm lake - Canoed to an island - Enjoyed the smell of rain - Identified shapes clouds formed #happiness #littlethings #littlethingsinlife #smalljoys

Leftovers turned into tomato and carrot soup Do you find that all of a sudden you have a ton of leftovers in your fridge and don’t know what to do with them? Soup! The answer is always soup! Lol I had an opened can of tomato paste, baby cut carrots that were starting to go white, and leftover broccoli penne from the day before... So I added the tomato paste and carrots to a pot, added a bit of water, italian season and salt and pepper. Simmered until carrots were soft. Then blended Meanwhile I microwaved the pasta so it’s nice and warm Poured the soup in a bowl, topped with broccoli and pasta and shredded some parmesan cheese And voila! Lunch was made What is your way of of dealing with leftover foods? #whatsforlunch #leftovers #leftovermakeover #tastethisnext #quickmeals #quicklunch #lunchideas #lunchideasforkids #kidapproved #kidapprovedfood

Sour cherries Very similar to regular sweet cherries but slightly more acidic. Growing up we had a sour cherry tree in our backyard and I grew up eating them constantly. In addition to eating them freshly picked, we made pies (with phyllo dough), cakes, jams and juices. And they were all delicious #cherries #sourcherries #freshlypicked #summer #fruit

Rutabaga 101: It is a root vegetable. The flavour is slightly sweet with a hint of cabbage aroma. It can be prepared in a variety of ways: roasted, baked, boiled, pureed, as a flavor enhancer in soups, uncooked and thinly julienned as a side dish or Side salad. You can use rutabaga in most dishes that call for a root vegetables. We usually peel, cube and roast. Pairs well with apples and maple syrup, or gruyere cheese, or potatoes and rosemary This particular one is massive, ...and kind of does look like a loaf of bread. Usually they are smaller and more spherical #rutabaga #rootvegetables #roastedveggies #kidssaythedarndestthings #kidssaythefunniestthings

Kabocha squash gnocchi with bacon and parmesan Bought this squash (swipe to see) at the @haliburton_farmers_market. Never had it before. It has a chestnutty flavour to it. Kids wanted to make gnocchi with it, so we did Recipe (makes about 10 servings, easily):... 1 squash (worked out to 5 cups roasted squash) 3 tsp salt 2 eggs 2.5 cups flour 1 cup shredded parmesan 1 tsp ground sage 1. Cut the squash in half, take out seeds 2. Put flesh side down on a parchment paper lined baking tray and add a cup of water to it 3. Roast for about 1h at 375F 4. Let cool slightly. Peel 5. Mash 6. Add all the ingredients to a stand mixer bowl 7. Mix on low-medium speed until dough not sticky 8. Divide dough into 8 9. Roll each piece of dough into a long, thin cylinder (1.5-2cm in diameter). Add extra flour if it starts sticking 10. Cut into little pillow shapes 11. Bring a pot of salted water to a boil. Add gnocchi 12. Stir so they don’t stick. Remove from pot and drain once they float to the top (2-3 minutes) 13. Coat with melted butter, so they don’t stick 14. Add the extras - this time we used crispy bacon and parmesan. And a mix of wax and yellow beans, also from the farmers market. Brown butter with sage also works great #gnocchi #recipe #squash #kabocha #kabochasquash #bacon #waxbeans #greenbeans #beans #dinner #eatthisnext #whatsfordinner #homemadegnocchi #crispybacon

Had an amazing dinner with the whole family at @ballaro_missionlasagna! Truly amazing food! And they have outdoor seating too We started with an octoburger - grilled octopus on a homemade burger bun, with rapini and ricotta cream. My 7 year old couldn’t stop raving about it Then came fried calamari with Sicilian sauce. So good we ordered the second one as well... Followed by lasagna roses. We tried carbonara and spinach. Both delicious! Kids loved the carbonara one because it comes with guanciale (aka bacon) Next up was the new menu addition: Nadia lasagna - spinach noodles with mushrooms, Parmigiano, pancetta, mozarella cheese and truffle béchamel. Not only is it beautiful to look at, it is also absolutely delicious And because we all like to finish a meal with something sweet, we went with both bombas (Italian fried bombone) filled with custard cream and Nutella. Does not get sweeter than that If you haven’t been to @ballaro_missionlasagna yet, you must visit it! They do outside and inside seating, as well as takeout and delivery.
