If you don't blame yourself for this, why are you constantly blaming yourself when every new diet fails? Dieting is sold to us as a very individual problem, and you're not alone if you're blaming yourself when your diet fails. Most people assume it's a problem with them. They didn't have enough willpower, they couldn't stick with it, but the reality is, these programs are designed to fail and to set you up for a lifetime of spending money on the next best thing that supposed...ly "works", If you want to break free of the diet cycle, know that there is another way. Hello! There have been a few new faces around here, so I wanted to reintroduce myself. My name is Jenn. I'm a Certified Intuitive Eating Counsellor and a Weight-Inclusive Registered Dietitian in Ottawa Ontario. I am also a mom of two tiny humans, a 4-year-old and an almost 2-year-old. My business did a complete 180 after my daughter was born in 2017. When she came along it really sunk in that I couldn't teach my daughter to love her body if my job was focused on temporarily c...hanging the bodies of others. Weight-Inclusive Practice and Intuitive Eating made so much more sense and strongly aligned with my values as a parent. My kids continue to greatly impact the work that I do on a daily basis in addition to keeping me on my toes. Feel free to introduce yourself and if there's something you're hoping to learn in this space, let me know in the comments #NutritionIQ #HAES #HealthAtEverySize #MomBod #MomBodLove #MomsOfInstagram #OttawaMom #DitchTheScale #IntuitiveEater #NotSuperMom #BodyRespect #WellnessMama #FoodFreedom #RiotsNotDiets #DietCultureDropout #Mompreneur #NurtureYourself #OttawaSmallBusiness #NourishNotPunish #SelfLoveJourney #BodyPositiveParenting #RaisingResilientKids #OntarioMom #IntuitiveEating #OttawaMoms

As a mom, I'm always amazed by how closely my kids watch what I do. Every so often I'll have to fast for medical tests and my 4 year old 100% notices. She'll even bring it up months after the fact, so not only does she notice, but it leaves an impression. If you think your kids don't notice that you're dieting, eating different foods than they are, or not eating when they eat, you need to think again. According to a study by Lowes & Tiggemann (2003), kids as young as 5 are no...t only aware that their parents are unsatisfied with their bodies, but they are also aware that their parents use dieting as a way to "fix" the problem. If you want to spare your kids a lifetime of endless dieting, you need to get in on the FREE masterclass being hosted by @hey_drmel and myself this week. There are two date options so you can choose what works best for you: - Wednesday, January 26th at 10 am EST - Thursday, January 27th at 8 pm EST Sign up now at www.nutritioniq.ca/masterclass #NutritionIQ #MoreThanABody #MomBod #MomBodLove #MomsOfInstagram #OttawaMom #OntarioMom #BodyRespect #BodyPositiveKids #DietCultureDropout #BodyPositiveParenting #NurtureYourself #NourishNotPunish #SelfLoveJourney #MomProblems #IntuitiveEating #SelfCare #ImNotSuperMom #PostpartumJourney #ParentingIsHard #MyBodyMyRules #BodyImage #BodyImageHealing #BeNourished #OttawaMoms #MomLife #MomLifeUnplugged #BreakingTheCycle #RaisingCapableKids Lowes, J. & Tiggemann, M. It's almost January friends, and that means the people promoting fad diets, rapid weight loss, detoxes etc. are going to be out in full force. It's ok to want to exercise more and/or eat better (whatever that may look like to you), but before you make changes, ask yourself, would I still do this if knew for a fact that my body would not change? If the answer is no, maybe you need to reconsider. It's been a rough year. How about in 2021 we commit to making changes that actuall...y bring joy to our lives. We all deserve to take up space. #nutrition #dietitian #ottawa #yow #canada #rd #healthyeating #coaching #food #allfoodsfit #rdentrepreneur #entrepreneur #worplacewellness #womeninbusiness #ottawabusiness #ottawawomeninbusiness #health #HAES #healthateverysize #resolutions #newyears #2021

I can't really believe that it's already December. This year B is at an age where Christmas and Santa are a big deal, so the countdown is on. This year we've opted to not do the traditional chocolate advent calendar and instead we're filling Santa's beard with cotton balls. When his beard is full, he visits! Now you may be thinking, of course you're not doing chocolate, you're a dietitian, do your kids even eat chocolate? And to that I say, heck yes we do. In fact, in our hou...se, when B has chocolate, it's part of her main meal. Like all foods in our house, if chocolate is on the menu (i.e. part of the meal), she's able to eat however much she wants. Does this end up with her eating only chocolate for a meal? Sometimes. But in doing this, we are teaching her that chocolate doesn't need to be put on a pedestal. Requiring kids to eat their vegetables to get a treat can reinforce that vegetables are bad/yucky and chocolate is the prize you get after suffering through them. This is why the one-a-day chocolate advent calendar doesn't really work in our house. She's still a bit young to understand the difference between a one-a-day chocolate countdown and the usual way we eat chocolate. Plus she's actually really enjoying the cotton balls. Each day we add a new one and she gets to count down how many more we have to add before it's full. It also gave me an excuse to start practicing with my new @officialcricut If you celebrate Christmas, how are you counting down this year? #nutrition #dietitian #ottawa #yow #canada #rd #healthyeating #allfoodsfit #rdentrepreneur #ottawabusiness #ottawawomeninbusiness #health #HAES #healthateverysize #adventcalendar #intuitiveeating #crafting #chocolate #yum #Christmas #Santa #cricut #cricutmaker #feedingkids #momlife #ottawamoms

For the past 7 months, baby O and I have had to follow a strict dairy and soy-free diet due to a suspected cows milk protein allergy. As someone who practices intuitive eating and doesn't restrict her diet in any way, this was a challenge. At first, I felt grief that I couldn't eat all the foods that I liked/was accustomed to. I also had strange cravings and felt weird compulsions to eat foods that were safe but weren't foods I would normally snack on (like pepperoni ). I...t took a few days to settle in and find alternative foods that we could use for general cooking, as well as snacks that I enjoyed eating and gave me some food freedom. 7 months in, I can say that I can fully honour my hunger, but the medical dietary restrictions definitely add another layer to intuitive eating. That being said, it's definitely possible, and I feel like this has given me some insight into what clients face when they want to eat intuitively but have other medical conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, IBS etc. We weren't given a ton of direction when we had to cut dairy and soy aside from a list of ingredients to look for, so if you need to go dairy and/or soy-free, here are some things I've learned: - Read labels! So many foods contain dairy and soy. A few surprises for us were wine, beef broth, most bread, crackers, and medications (including vitamin D drops) - Start with the basics. A good milk and butter substitute allowed us to basically eat normally. We were able to substitute what we needed to into recipes that we already enjoyed. It can be overwhelming to have to look for all new recipes and ingredients, so keep it simple. - Review what you already cook. For us, meals like spaghetti, stew, fajitas, and omelettes are staples, and with little to no modification can be dairy and soy-free. Don't feel like you need to reinvent the wheel. - Experiment with snacks. Some dairy and soy-free alternatives are delicious, some are less delicious. Try a few new things and see what you like. - Start cooking. Dietary restrictions like allergies can make eating out tricky. Even if foods are safe, restaurants run the risk of cross-contamination. We've been fortunate to find 2 restaurants local to us that we feel safe ordering from, but outside of those, we cook at home. Have any questions? Let me know in the comments! #DairyFree #SoyFree #CMPA #FoodFreedom #IntutiveEating #HAES #HealthAtEverySize #DairyFreeBreastfeeding

It has been a bit since I've written a new post! As a weight-inclusive dietitian and mom of 2, I want to let you know that I'm not immune to diet culture messaging. Trust me, I get so many targetted ads to lose weight and get my pre-baby body back, it's easy to get sucked in. So I'm not sure if this post is for you or for me, but I want you to know that your success as a mother is not dependent on looking a certain way. Take up all the space you need, your body is good enough. #nutrition #dietitian #ottawa #yow #canada #rd #healthyeating #allfoodsfit #health #HAES #healthateverysize #newmom #motherhood #normalizebodychanges #momsofinstagram #takeupspace #riotsnotdiets
