WELLNESS WEDNESDAYYYY~~~~~~ ~ Quite frequently I hear, "Don't trust your emotions. It's better to be rational." There are a couple of issues with this: 1 It implies that emotions are irrational when it's actually important for us to be in touch with our emotions so we can understand what our needs are (there's another post about the importance of emotions); 2 Only being "rational" or "cognitive" can be misleading because there are cognitive distortions.... Cognitive distortions are deeply held beliefs of biased perspectives or thoughts that we have about ourselves and/or the world around us. We may want to automatically trust our rational brain, but it may have developed non-helpful or faulty connections over time that have been reinforced. These patterns and systems of thought can be difficult to recognize because they are frequently subtle. For example: "I should lose weight." This statement is seemingly innocent and rational at first but let's examine it. Who or what is saying this? Is it something that we have been taught that in order to "look good" we should look a certain way? Whose standard is this? Is it my own or someone else's? Is this statement actually true? When using critical words like 'SHOULD', 'MUST', 'OUGHT', or 'HAVE TO' it can make us feel guilty or feel like we have already failed because it's saying that there is a set standard that everyone has to reach. It doesn't take into account the individual person and their needs and that some people do not fit this system. This can lead to anxiety, depression, and oppressive systems. The posted photo points out 10 common cognitive distortions. Here's a link for more of an explanation and other cognitive distortions: https://psychcentral.com/l/15-common-cognitive-distortions/ If you want to work on your cognitive distortions, feel free to contact our Counsellor Mia at [email protected] or 778-512-9172. ~ See more
