The 2021 Indigenous Languages Month theme is "Cook With Me." Learn about traditional foods and try cooking in the language of your community. Today, try making Lisa Smith’s Family Chili from the community of Hay River. There are two official indigenous languages in Hay River - Dene Zhaté (South Slavey) and Nhiyawwin (Cree). You can find the recipe in English and Cree below. For more recipes in the NWT's official Indigenous Languages, click here: https://www.ece.gov.nt.ca//indigenou/activities-and-events
"Now, I can introduce myself and tell all my family that I love them in Chipewyan. It’s small steps that lead the way to revitalizing language and culture. Take a song you always sing with your children, or a book you read to them, and translate it into your language. Learn one word a day and after a year you’ve learnt 365. Be strong within yourself and never let anyone shame you for trying" - Jaylene Delorme-Buggins Read more from Jaylene here: https://www.nwtliteracy.ca/blog/language-why-it-important
