We are thrilled that Emily Beynon, principal flute of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra (@Concertgebouworkest), will be offering a masterclass to NYO musicians as part of our Virtual Training Institute. Beynon has been playing a few concerts, which have been either streamed or for a very small audience. She has also been keeping busy adding new tutorials on her YouTube channel: I have loved the ‘machine’ that is the orchestra since the very first time I played in one, aged 1...2 and I knew then that I wanted to do it as much as possible! I love the repertoire, the teamwork, the travel, the constant learning and striving to be better. If you are passionate about it, then it will reward you greatly in all manner of ways! The Wales-born flutist suggests that young musicians take time to sleep more, cook more healthily, do some walking/running/cycling/yoga/stretching, be curious and read more books and listen to some of the wealth of online concerts, saying This period WILL pass and life as we once knew it WILL resume at some point ... be ready and fit to embrace it fully! What does she miss most? The buzz that an audience gives. I will NEVER take that for granted again!

Jauvon Gilliam is principal timpanist with the @National.Symphony, an instructor at the University of Maryland School of Music (@TerpsMusic) and, he was a timpanist for the @WinnipegSymphony for 7 years. In advance of his masterclass this summer for NYO’s Virtual Training Institute, we asked him about what has been keeping him busy since the National Symphony Orchestra ceased performances mid-March. I have formed a new production company designed to create high-quality conte...nt for Fortune 500 companies, with the goal to keep the issues of systemic racism, police brutality, and social injustice at the forefront of people's consciousness. For NYO musicians, he advises: There are plenty of ways to excel at playing your instrument. None of them matter if you're not a good person. No one wants to play with a jackwagon, no matter how good you are. Being in an orchestra is the ultimate lesson in collaboration, teamwork, having the ability to adapt on the fly, and to compromise. The life skills are incalculable.
