Registration opens today for the 2020 BC Summer Reading Club which has some new at-home options since local libraries may not be as available over the summer. This is a free reading program designed to engage kids (ages 5-14) with reading in a way that is fun, educational, inclusive and community-oriented. It's a great way to keep kids occupied over the summer while practicing reading skills, meeting new friends, learning about your community and using the library, and havin...g fun! This year's theme is "Explore the Universe" with the following weekly sub-themes: - Week 1: Up and Away Transportation and technology - Week 2: Home Base Planet Earth, animals, the environment - Week 3: What if? The future, science fiction, imaginations - Week 4: Sun, Moon, and Stars Planets, moons, and other celestial objects - Week 5: Out of This World Fantasy, mythology, other universes - Week 6: Into the Great Unknown Aliens, black holes, and other mysteries of space - Week 7: Blast off! "Produced by Blackside, Inc. and nationally broadcast on PBS, this comprehensive 14-part television documentary series about the American Civil Rights Movement utilizes rare historical film and interviews with participants from pivotal moments in the struggle for civil rights." Note: Commonsense Media rates Eyes on the Prize as being 14+ so this content is likely for older kids and adults. https://www.commonsensemedia.org/movie-re/eyes-on-the-prize Note 2: Creating a free account with the "Facing History and Ourselves" website is required to view the study guide and documentary films. We don't have an affiliation with this site, but their content is powerful and important.
