Life is busy. Everyday we ask questions like: What’s happening today? What should I wear? How am I going to fit everything in?... But then there are bigger questions like: Why am I here. What’s my purpose? Is there more to life than this? These are some of life’s big questions. But there’s rarely enough time to think things through. That’s why Alpha exists. Alpha is a place to explore life’s big questions in a safe and open environment. It’s a series of sessions where anyone can share their thoughts and opinions and ask questions without feeling judged. #tryalpha Online beginning February 28, 1pm. Get in touch with Rev. Heather Joy James for more info.

Sunday April 19th sermon: John 20:19-30 After Jesus' death, and before the disciples meet the Risen Christ, in the back of their minds, jostling around were the seeds of lies and shame and maybe, an increasing feeling within the disciples that if they were to meet Jesus, risen from the dead, that he would come to confront them with their failures. Shame is a powerful emotion. Shame causes us to hide and to believe our insecurities and the lies we tell ourselves. Shame is the... what if or if only game. Dr. Brene Brown is a research professor who has spent the past two decades studying courage, vulnerability, shame, and empathy, she says this about shame: Shame is the intensely painful feeling or experience of believing that we are flawed and therefore unworthy of love and belonging. The disciples' shame was telling them they had to hide in secret, keeping silent, with judgmental if only thoughts niggling around in the back of their minds. How could Jesus forgive them? If Jesus was alive, and he came to find them, shame was telling them that somehow they might be in trouble with the Lord. How could Jesus bring anything but condemnation for their faults and failures after the way they behaved in Jesus’ last hours. They longed to see Jesus, yes, but shame, a powerful motivator was likely causing them to become ever so slightly, little by little, increasingly defensive and closed off to one another, and the rest of the world. Dr. Brene Brown also says this about shame, LISTEN, with the disciples in mind: If you put shame in a petri dish it needs 3 things to grow exponentially: secrecy, silence, and judgment. But, if you put the same amount of shame in a petri dish with empathy, shame cannot survive. Jesus’ resurrection visit through closed doors brought empathy- peace- to the disciples whose shame was brewing in a petri dish of secrecy, silence, and judgment. We can close ourselves off, we can hide our hearts and vulnerabilities away, we can live believing the lies that shame tells us about who we are. That’s our choice. But I’ll tell you what can really change things in our lives. When we are met with the risen Christ who is himself blameless, those feelings of shame and insecurity that cause bad behaviour have less power over us. When we meet with Jesus and we stand in front of him, just as we are, we are imparted peace and we are given a holy calling and the gift of the holy spirit to be with us. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NSy8lASmvDE See more

Stopped by the building the other day, and thought we should share some new photos showing the rooms with the furniture in place. ( we still need to get a pulpit, it’s in the works.) So everyone stay safe and we will be gathering here soon. God bless you all.
