Oakville Choir for Children & Youth 23.11.2020

RHV is singing the Arabic Carol Laylat Al-Milad (Night of Christmas) led by the amazing Natalie Fasheh. In rehearsal, Natalie played the video of OC singing this piece in concert last year, with the lyrics posted. She then asked RHV to submit words that describe how this song made them feel while listening to it and reading the lyrics. Using Mentimeter, she created this wordcloud to represent their feelings and reactions to the music. Choir is certainly differen...t virtually, but one thing is for sure: music still (evidently) moves us. Now more than ever we must come together to listen, create and reflect on music in our lives. Thank you, Natalie for leading this valuable discussion and reflection! See more

We are SO grateful for the amazing weather we’ve had this fall! It allowed RHV to have another outdoor (distanced + masked) vocal technique workshop. We’ve all been missing singing together a lot these days, so it felt extra great to connect in person in a fun and safe way.

It was performance day in RHV Jr! All our singers performed a solo piece they’ve been working on from our Virtual Vocal Academy. Today we heard art songs, folk songs, jazz, pop and music theatre. Congrats to our singers who bravely shared their voices!

Movie night! Last week our associate conductor Dr. Charlene Pauls hosted a zoom viewing party of the documentary The Social Dilemma with RHV Chamber. The discussion that followed was fascinating and extremely insightful, as the girls discussed the complexities of social media. Thank you for opening up this important dialogue with our choristers, Charlene!

Happy Halloween! We are so excited to share this spooky song with you! RHV Cherub choir has worked extremely hard on their very first virtual project, singing the wonderful "Halloween Night", composed by the OC's former Associate Artistic Director, Janet Stachow Correia. The poem, by Isabella Hamilton, was selected as part of a composition contest open to all Oakville students in 2015. Recording alone into a phone is very different from singing together with our friends, but we are so proud of our young choristers' beautiful singing- and they look pretty cute in their Halloween costumes too!

Two weeks ago RHV Chamber enjoyed an outdoor rehearsal! We discovered that our singers were holding back their singing voices due to lots of virtual singing in their homes (and likely trying to avoid making too much noise!) so we worked on freeing our whole body to sing. After lots of vocal warmups these girls were singing with their full, wonderful sound that we know and love! We were so grateful that the beautiful fall weather allowed us to join together (distanced and masked ) in song!

Did you know that singing in groups is scientifically proven to make you feel happier? Researchers examined the benefits of singing among people with mental health struggles including anxiety and depression. They found that people who took part in a community singing group maintained or improved their mental health. The combination of singing and socializing was an essential part of feeling great because it promotes an ongoing sense of belonging and wellbeing. It’s ...not too late to join our wonderful community filled with joyful singing and connection! Virtual programs available for ages 4-19. First rehearsals start on September 28/29. Sadly, many school music programs will be extremely limited this year due to current COVID-19 restrictions. Most schools can’t allow students to play instruments or sing during in-person music classes. Our hearts go out to students who will miss out on this, and teachers who are doing their best to teach without these valuable tools. If your child loves singing and would benefit from being part of a quality music program this year, feel free to reach out. Our online p...rograms are chock full of engaging music activities complete with singing, access to instruments, and ample resources to support their learning. Not to mention they will also be loads of fun! There’s no doubt about it, we could ALL benefit from a little more music and fun these days! Link in comments to learn more.
