In the News: Myopia link to smartphone use "With the COVID-19 pandemic, the time on electronic devices dramatically increased in children because of remote learning and fewer opportunities for kids to do other activities," Dr. Pang says. "Based on the results from both studies, the risk for myopia development and progression may be higher in this pandemic situation." https://www.aoa.org//clinical/myopia-digital-use-children

Finding that you are spending more time looking at a screen lately? Remember to take frequent breaks to help reduce eyestrain and eye fatigue. We often remind patients of our 20-20-20 rule. Look away every 20 minutes, for 20 seconds, at something at least 20 feet away.

Great coverage on highlighting the increased prevalence of myopia in children and why we are so passionate about helping to stop the epidemic. Because at the end of the day, it’s about giving our children the best future by protecting their vision. Have questions regarding our child’s vision? Worried they are developing myopia? Feel free to e-mail Dr. Yeung, our lead myopia control expert, about your concerns or questions ([email protected]) to learn what you can start doing now. Don’t wait until it’s too late.

Announcing our Student Contest!!! As many of you know, we are passionate about helping your children’s eyesight from worsening, especially during their current break from school. And with increased online learning, it is more important than ever to develop hobbies and pastimes away from screens. To encourage healthy habits among our patients, we are holding a screen-free student contest! Let your child (and their friends) tell us how they’re enjoying themselves when taking ...a break from classroom learning. This is a fun way to help fellow students while home from school. Here are the rules: Any child (under the age of 17) can submit a short video (1 minute or less) on how they are enjoying themselves without screens or technology. Three winners will be chosen and receive Amazon Gift Cards All winning videos will also be featured on our clinic Facebook and Instagram page (with parents permission). DEADLINE: Friday, April 3rd, Email us your video, along with your name & age, [email protected] Good luck! #oakville #oakvillekids #oakvillemoms #oakvilledads #haltonhealth #mississaugakids #mississaugamoms #community #communitytogether #oakvilleeyecare #screenfreecontest
