The Financial Accountability Office projects that the backlog of cancelled surgeries will reach 419,200 procedures by the end of September. Ontario’s fiscal watchdog says it will take the province approximately three and a half years to clear the surgical backlog from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Hundreds of thousands of Ontario women face breast cancer screening delays due to COVID-19 disruptions. Unfortunately, we’re already seeing more people coming in with (breast cancer) cases at a higher stage because they’ve delayed screening, Seely said. We know this will cost thousands of lives from breast cancer, with delays of more than six months. Dr. Jean Seely
The OAR is receiving a large number of calls from all corners of the province expressing deep concern about the lack of access to Covid vaccinations for radiologists and technologists working in high-risk situations. Many reported they have been told they are not currently eligible to be vaccinated for the foreseeable future. Contradictory messages in various health regions around the province have made it difficult to impossible for radiologists and the technologists to ge...t vaccinations even though they are dealing with confirmed or suspected Covid patients each day. For example, Peel Region has specifically excluded radiologists in the community and many technologists have been turned away at vaccination centres saying they are at a lower priority than clerical staff in family physician offices. Please share the Toronto Sun article with your MRTs and front-line staff.
Happy International Women's Day! On #IWD and every day, we continue to advocate for all women in radiology and society. Thank you to women for their compassion, kindness and leadership in caring for patients and their families. #ChooseToChallenge #IWD2021
Fewer women are going for mammograms because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and that has experts worried about the long-term implications. Dr. Jean Seely, radiology professor at the University of Ottawa and head of the breast imaging section at the Ottawa Hospital, and Dr. Aisha Lofters, a physician with the Women's College Hospital in Toronto discuss how the drop in screenings could increase the risk of death among women.

Urgent Need to Correct an Oversight to Health Care Professionals Diagnosing/Scanning Covid Patients. Contact your local MPP. Please urge the Premier, the Health Minister and the COVID-19 Vaccine Distribution Task Force to include radiology clinic physicians, imaging technologists and staff in the Phase 1 vaccination prioritization program plan to protect them and their patients. Thank you, https://cme.oarinfo.ca/take_action.php
Read the Ontario Association of Radiologists and Ontario Association of Medical Radiation Sciences Position Statement on COVID-19 Vaccinations in Ontario’s Medical imaging Independent Health Facilities. The OAR and OAMRS strongly recommends that the Ontario government officially include all Independent Health Facility imaging physicians, residents, fellows, medical imaging technologists and staff in the Phase 1 vaccination prioritization program to ensure equitable safety and access for critical health care professionals and their patients. A similar approach should be addressed in other areas of our health care system where such gaps exist and/or differences have been identified in the approach already adopted by other provinces. #COVID19 #vaccination

Radiologists are integral members of the emergency department team. Most emergency patients require a radiology investigation to guide the emergency doctor’s treatment of urgent cases. Many cases are life threatening. Early diagnosis and initiation of treatment facilitated by radiologist are vital in determining a patient’s outcome. Time to treatment is a critical factor for life-threatening emergencies and underlines why radiologists work 24/7/365.

Wait times for diagnostic tests climb in Manitoba after pandemic prompted spring shutdown. Wait for some tests has quadrupled after non-urgent procedures were cancelled in March due to pandemic. #radiology
Ontario Government includes Non-Emergency DI in Hospitals and IHFs in Stage 1 Recovery Announcement. A significant amount of OAR background work and communications with government has facilitated the commencement of radiology service delivery so that it would be included in today’s Ford Government announcement. Ontario radiologists can be assured that important work on behalf of our specialty has been heard and this will continue to happen as we prepare to provide a soon-to-be-released initial guide on the resumption of DI services premised on safety for staff and patients. https://oarinfo.ca///stage1-includes-di-hospitals-and-ihfs

In Memoriam Anne Parsons, OAR CME & CBMD Program Director. It is with great sadness that we advise members that long-time OAR employee, Anne Parsons passed away this past week after a long and brave struggle with cancer. Anne will be known to hundreds of radiologists and technologists as the driving force who organised the OAR’s CME program from its inception with about 15,000 attendees and hundreds of hours of excellent programming. Anne was also integrally involved in ...the development of the OAR’s Canadian Bone Mineral Densitometry Program accrediting DXA sites and later the BMD CME program for radiologists and technologists. Between these two spheres of activity, Anne was a very special person who touched many colleagues across Ontario and Canada. https://oarinfo.ca//memoriam-anne-parsons-oar-cme-cbmd-pro
