This Friday, April 30, Professor Isabel Meirelles in the Faculty of Design, Graduate Studies, is part of a panel exploring the exhibit BarabásiLab. Hidden Patterns on the occasion of its opening at ZKM | Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe, Germany. The exhibition opens with a guided tour with Albert-László Barabási at 6 p.m. (CET), followed by a live discussion with Albert-László Barabási, Alice Grishchenko, Isabel Meirelles and Peter Weibel about Network-Thinking, at 7... p.m. (CET). Hidden Patterns introduces the work of the physicist and network scientist Albert-László Barabási and his research laboratory. The focus of the exhibition is the development of network visualization over the past 25 years, which can be seen in the projects of BarabásiLab. Professor Meirelles wrote the chapter, Representing Complexity: An Ode to the Node-Link Diagram in the book Hidden Patterns: Visualizing Networks at BarabásiLab, which was published by Hatje Cantz in 2020 on the occasion of the exhibit, which debuted at the Ludwig Museum in Budapest.

A generous gift of $100,000 from The Schulich Foundation will create two annual awards to recognize the talent and achievement of students in the Faculty of Design at OCAD U. The Schulich Leader Award in Graphic Design and the Schulich Leader Award in Illustration will be bestowed annually on the top fourth-year student in each program. CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: OCAD U is excited to partner with Canadian Tire Corporation to create an exclusive call for submissions for members of the OCAD U community. This call for artworks is a new initiative that will commission five new works created by OCAD U students/alumni in support of Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities. These commissioned artworks will be auctioned in September 2021 at the annual Canadian Tire Dealers Convention, benefiting Jumpstart Charities, which helps... kids overcome barriers to sport and recreation in an effort to provide inclusive play for kids of all abilities. Individual project grants of $2,000 each will be awarded to OCAD U affiliated artists by a jury made up of Canadian Tire and OCAD U representatives. Recipients will be selected on the basis of a short, written proposal and the strength of a portfolio of existing work. Proposals should demonstrate an affinity for the heritage of Canadian Tire Corporation, the role of the retailer in supporting Canadians, or showcase the charitable work of Jumpstart which as an organization breaks down barriers to ensure that every kid has a chance to play. Works could potentially respond to themes such as the role of Canadian Tire in local communities, the longer history of Canadian Tire or Jumpstart themes such as movement, inclusiveness, children, ability or sport, but are not limited to these recommendations.
