This summer we are taking a break from teaching sailing. Instead we are heading to Southeast Alaska on a personal adventure cruise! If you are interested in following along to learn about our route to Alaska and interesting stops along the way you can follow us on our blog, The Adventures of Sarah Jean II. http://www.sailblogs.com/member/sarahjean2

There are orca sightings when you are doing the chasing . . . and then there is you being chased by orcas! This video is pretty insane. Check it out in full screen mode!

If you are interested in tall ships, a big one is coming to Richmond in May. Tours of the ship will be available!

Here is a photo that caught my eye. Not only is this a gorgeous yacht that has been refit by Royal Huisman, builders of world class super yachts, but our daughter, Amanda is currently in Amsterdam working on the refit of another Royal Huisman yacht called Gliss. Looks like this yard does some very special work!

MAINTENANCE TIP: Salt water and marine electrical systems do do mix well. And some places are just hard to keep dry. You can protect electrical components and connections in damp areas with a spray on sealant. These photos show a windless relay before and after. In the second photo the relay and connectors have been cleaned up with a small wire brush and then sprayed with a product called Corrosion Block, available from Galleon Marine in Richmond.

Ever wondering if you are sailing in a shipping lane? Check out this cool video showing ship traffic patterns around the world. Some of the main shipping lanes become obvious.

Check out this great little video from the 2017 Antigua Classic Yacht Race. Our daughter, Amanda, and her boyfriend, Kyle, sailed in this regatta a few years ago aboard the Fife schooner, s/y Astor. Looks like fun times!

Watching a sailboat race, especially in light air, can be pretty boring. But speed up the race with time lapse photography and things get exciting! Enjoy the action!

MAINTENANCE TIP: Winches and windlasses are usually made of bronze and then chrome plated. After many years of use and exposure to sun and salt water the chrome can start pealing off, exposing the bronze that quickly turns green. Our 16 year old Muir windlass had lost most of its chrome. This winter I removed it and had the above deck parts stripped and re-chromed for a cost of about $500. It now looks like new! The project included new seals. Using Lanocote on all the fasteners will ensure easy future disassembly.
