If this is what your peonies look like, you are most likely dealing with powdery mildew, a common fungal disease that affects plants. The fungi can survive the winter on leaves, stems, dormant buds and even fallen leaves on the ground. To help mitigate the threat next season, its a good idea to cut down your infected herbaceous peonies right down to the soil line as the plants go dormant and carefully dispose of all infected material (do not compost). By doing so, you are minimizing the risk of the pathogen overwintering and re-infecting your plants next year.

Is it even fall if you haven't jumped in a leaf pile yet?

Watering right up until the ground freezes is good life insurance for your evergreens. Cedars, boxwoods, rhododendrons, holly etc will all appreciate being fully hydrated going into the winter season. Give them a good watering now and right up until the ground freezes to prevent winter burn. If you planted other shrubs and trees this season, it is important to remember them with the watering as well.

Found some random cloves of garlic laying around the house? Instead of throwing them out, try planting them in the ground! Sprouted or not, this is the perfect time to throw those babies in the ground and let Mother Nature do her thing. Even garlic purchased from the grocery store will do! For best results, ensure that you are using garlic grown in Ontario. Each clove should sit pointy side up, at a depth about 3 or 4 times of its own length. Place each clove approximately 6 inches apart, cover with soil and you'll have a fresh new crop next summer!

Many of you are busy cleaning up your gardens before winter hits. Keep in mind that Lilacs have already made buds which will turn into flowers next spring. If you prune now, you will be cutting off the flower buds. If you want to enjoy beautiful, fragrant flowers next spring, it's better to wait until they have finished blooming before taking out the pruning shears

Just because it's an evergreen doesn't mean that it wont drop any of its needles. In fact, many evergreens have a a classic "annual shed" where they drop some of their older needles. Pictured here is a White Pine with normal fall shedding. They will typically hang on to the newest needles right at the tips of the branches and drop older ones behind this years' growth. This shedding is perfectly normal and nothing to be concerned about as long as the tree is hanging on to the newest needles. Other trees such as Spruce, Fir and even cedars will undergo this same shedding process at some point.

When even the roses have a hard time believing it's fall! With glorious weather like this, who can blame them?
