Ocean Vegetables Community Garden 17.06.2021

Years of dreaming about irrigation systems at the garden came true yesterday thanks to our fearless leader Stephanie Grindon, an eager and hard working group of workshop participants and generous donations to our work from Quality Garden and Pet & the Rotary Club of the Sunshine Coast - Sechelt. Hundreds of feet of lines were run setting our garden up to be more water wise and more efficient for volunteers who want to contribute to watering this summer- btw, there's more line to connect if anyone wants to help out this week :) Contact [email protected] if you have a few hours to donate! And don’t forget about our annual community planting party next Sunday (May 16th) starting at 11am. Bring your plant and seed donations and positive vibes and together, lets grow some food! Onwards!

May is bringing such wonderful growth. Its been pleasant to see so many people harvesting things from the garden already! We will be planting more things mid month to create a bountiful harvest this summer. And hey community: This is your garden. Growing food is activism. Growing food in the city is important work. Get in touch if you want to join us this summer.

The rain held off yesterday and the community really came out to help us wake up the garden! There was weed whacking to clean up pathways, the turning over of our fall cover crops for green manure, re-mulching our fabulous garlic and manicuring flower/herb beds. Thanks to the expertise of Stephanie Grindon of BioScapes Gardening, we now have an irrigation map and plan for over 50% of the beds to be installed next month. Stay tuned for irrigation workshop sign up details and the date of our annual planting party in mid May. Thanks as always for our financial support from the District of Sechelt and the helping hands of our community volunteers! Get in touch if you want to help grow lots of healthy, fresh food for the city this year.

Well that’s how a community puts a garden to sleep! What a workshop that ends with the garden is all tucked in side to side. Huge thanks to Stephanie Grindon from BioScapes Gardening for the learning today and all our hardworking participants. Hay, compost, leaves, lime, manure, Organic fertilizer, seaweed, cardboard, love. The Garden will now rest and be ready for increased production in the spring.

Well, things are beginning to wind down at the garden. As always, a big thanks to our dedicated volunteers (Jackie, Janice, Linda, Nicole) and this week...thanks to Salish Soils for delivering some rich compost to freshen up the beds of our garden boxes for their upcoming winter slumber. PS: Due to rescheduling, three spaces have opened up at the "Wintering and Garlic" workshop now taking place on October 18th at 1pm. Learn about amending, mulching, cover cropping, soil health and garlic planting AND help us put the gardens to sleep. Spaces are limited and pre-registration is necessary.
