Odd Society Spirits 19.11.2020

It’s Maple Whisky time again. Our double maple is a delicious combination of single malt whisky aged in ex-maple syrup barrels and single malt whisky that was made with maple wood smoked malt aged in ex-bourbon barrels. (Big Leaf Maple was used for smoking the malt. Big Leaf is our native maple, exclusive to the Pacific West Coast). The resulting dram is a slightly sweet, slightly smoky, wonderfully balanced sipping whisky, unlike any other. Available starting Thursday, November 12. 375 ml bottles are priced at $38 (tax included) at the distillery. Store prices vary. Update: this Maple will also be available online by Friday.

Today is the day! Salal Gin is back and our first batch of the season is made solely with berries harvested in Powell River. We open at 3pm, see you then.

Your favourite local winter liqueur is back! And, for the first time ever, we will be releasing two different terroir-driven batches of our Salal Gin: one using berries from Powell River on Nov. 5, and the other with berries from Haida Gwaii (release date is yet to be determined but it will be before Christmas). This year, we received two shipments of salal berries at different times, each handpicked in a single origin along the coast of B.C.. The first, harvested in Powell ...River by our friend and food forager & educator, Alexander McNaughton, has already arrived and finished steeping in our Wallflower Gin. The second shipment arrived from remote Haida Gwaii last week and has just begun maceration. The savoury salal berry is a perfect substitute for the blackthorn berry traditionally used in making sloe gin. It imparts tart, tannic and herbaceous properties with a hint of spice to create a West Coast interpretation of the classic British liqueur. Our Salal Gin recently earned an Excellence in Terroir acknowledgement and a gold medal in the Contemporary Gin category at the 2020 Canadian Artisan Spirit Competition (Artisan Distillers Canada). Odd Society Spirits Salal Gin is sold in 375 mL bottles for $30 and can be purchased at the distillery (1725 Powell Street) Thursday through Saturday, through our online shop and at select private liquor stores starting November 5. Perfect timing for holiday shopping, shipping and sipping!

Adding a little treat to our trick we’ve partnered with our friend Drunken Chocolatier to bring you a fang-tastic chocolate and cocktail pairing in the spirit of Hallows’ Eve. This Friday and Saturday sink your teeth into a devilish pairing of our Salem The Cat cocktail and their Creme de Cassis truffle!

Mike Usinger gets acquainted with our Mongrel Unaged Rye Spirit this Halloween for The Georgia Straight. "Odd Society suggests you'll taste upper-shelf chocolate, which is totally accurate, but hands up if you’re convinced that kirsch morello cherries and Moroccan black pepper somehow wrangled an invite to the party." Curious on how to use Mongrel in a show-stopping yet easy-to-make cocktail this weekend try the Mystery Machine from Odd Society bar manager, Olivia Pov...archook. It has been 7 years since we opened our distillery. Looking back to where we began seeing the faces and feeling the love that our community provided us truly fortifies our spirit. We are entrenched in East Van, in this brewery district; it is the heart of who we are. We started with East Van Vodka and have since developed 13 predominate spirits and liqueurs plus many exclusive releases that all represent something unique about our province. We are constantly moving forward..., often feeling like our feet are moving faster than our heads and hearts. One thing that remains true and certain is the incredible people that have supported us along the way. To our staff and colleagues, our loyal guests and neighbours, friends and supporters, the restaurants, bars and stores, and the servers, bartenders, retailers and media who champion us, we thank you!! Take a look back...
