Just watched the YouTube video "The Disenchanted Forest" for the first time. Yesterday at the Conservation Council of New Brunswick AGM, it was selected as the winner of the 2020 Beth McLaughlin Environmental Journalism Award! I understand now why Rosella Melanson and the team of judges viewed this video worthy of this award. It sure is such important and excellent journalism! Please tell council to vote against this plan. 1 The Management Plan (MP) for Odell is not a Management Plan. It is primarily a Trails Re-Construction plan in an attempt to minimise disturbance to 3 Management Zones within Odell based on the ecological sensitivity of each zone. 2 The MP proposes a reduction of linear trails available for usage by walkers from 18km to 10km.... 3. The MP proposes the construction of 4km of special use Future Trails 40% to 50% of these new Future Trails for Mountain Bikers are to be created in Zone 1 the Conservation Zone which is mapped as the most highly sensitive of the 3 Management Zones, in spite of the MP and this Map saying ..the proposed trail network favours routes that minimize ecological disturbance. 4. The MP proposes the construction of 4km of special use Future Trails . 40% to 50% of these new Future Trails for Mountain Bikers are to be created in Zone 1 the Conservation Zone which is mapped as the most highly sensitive of the 3 Management Zones, in spite of the MP and this Map saying ..the proposed trail network favours routes that minimize ecological disturbance. 5. The MP proposes construction of 4km of Future Trails (see Map) for Mountain Bikers at a cost of $600,000 to $900,000. These trails will be not be usable by walkers because they are too narrow at 0.5-1.0m to allow conflict between walkers and Mountain Bikers. P. 141 of the MP says bikers scare walkers, P.143 says seniors want to feel secure. 6. Page 2 of the Administrative Report for June 24th from Julie Baker says in part the purpose of the MP is to:.help resolve conflicts. P.75 also says help resolve conflict. However the MP does not resolve or attempt to Manage Conflict between Active Mountain biking activities and passive walkers - be they seniors, juniors or ages in between. Personal Safety of users is an issue at the start of the MP discussion and is still an issue at the conclusion of the MP. conclusion of the MP. 7. Killarney MP P.24 says there are no conflicts between uses, such as between walkers and bikers, because there is plenty of room for each. This is not addressed in the Odell Plan because there is not plenty of room on 1.0m wide trails being created for Mountain Bikers. 8. P. 87 of Odell MP says The first challenge is to resolve conflicts between passive and active recreation activities. However, no resolution to this challenge is proposed in the document. A Management Plan to minimize ecological disturbance, should both propose Management and minimize ecological disturbance in its Plan. This does neither. Tell city council to vote against this Management Plan for Odell.

Fredericton, N.B. has updated a proposed plan for the evolution of Odell and Killarney parks, after the first one fell flat with many locals, including cyclists It was too skewed towards conservation, , said Mike Davis, owner of Radical Edge bike shops. The way it all was presented to us in the beginning, was that we were wrecking Odell Park, between ourselves and the disc golf players, said Davis. The lack of green space for leisure activities in the Odell plan caused a string of complaints from residents that cycle on the south-side trails, according to city officials. There were over 230 emails that we received. We went through them and took notes and made the adjustments needed, said Henri Mallet, councillor for Ward 12. Local cyclists say the plan for winter months still needs some work.
