Odin is inviting you to watch the nba final together! Come on now.

Odin's Pub 29.10.2020

Well the age old debate on housing, jobs, the economy, taxes, growth, seniors, families, etc. has turned up again. I'm one to usually avoid wading into debates ...in the comment section - I'm more happy to discuss these issues in person over a coffee but I have something to post that is slightly related to all these topics! I am celebrating my 24th birthday at the end of March with a party at Odin's (everyone is invited 19+!) and I hope I get to spend many more birthday's and milestones in this community because I love it so much. More than anyone can really imagine. But I'm worried about this community and I want to make sure it's still a vibrant place when I'm 30, 40, 50, even 75 and my grandkids are in the school and I can go to the hospital 24/7 if needed, buy my groceries, get a good coffee and enjoy a good community choir concert. Because of this, I'm trying to put the rubber to the pavement (or sun rays to the panel!) and get something done to increase economic development in this community to ensure that that future is a reality. In this way, I am trying to start a cowork space called the Lift in the upstairs of the old Silverton General Store managed by the Silverton Cowork Society - a registered non-profit. A cowork space will do the following - Help local people by providing training and mentorship to start new businesses, buy existing ones, or expand their own. - Help non-profits by providing training organizing tactics, and general management - Act as a platform for networking to connect people who may be doing the same thing. We all know we have too few resources to be duplicating work! - And, generally bring people out of the woods. It's been studied that people are more effective, creative, innovative and productive when they work in a space with other people rather than on their own. But on top of helping locals the Lift will attract new residents to our community. So many young families in urban centres are being pushed out and looking for a place to go. And some are looking to come really rural! I've spoken to people who are interested in trying out a community like New Denver/Silverton but they're afraid that it's too isolated, they don't know how they'll integrate, and most importantly, they don't want to work from home. They want to work in an innovative space that connects people and provides a professional and creative environment. The Lift will do that! We want to be the welcome matt to new residents by connecting them with the amazing people, services, businesses and organizations that call this place home. I don't think we're going to have any major industry development in our communities any time soon. So I want to attract people to move here who can bring their jobs with them. I know that housing is a problem. Where will they live? I know internet is a problem. What if their job requires fiber optic internet? And I know that fears of growth is a problem for some! What if we grow super super big??? We don't have the space for that, so I'm not really concerned. There are amazing people in our community currently working on these issues of housing and internet and they are trying to find solutions. I don't want to press pause on the cowork just to wait for the other pieces to unfold when we can all work on multiple paths together. And hopefully, by the time the Lift gets their doors open, there will be fiber internet and housing, or at least it'll be in the near future following that. I'm optimistic about what we can accomplish because I believe in this community <3 So I have a bit of a shameless plug. My birthday party is a sliding scale donation of $10-$30. After paying DJ Grandpa Phunk and the designated drivers, all extra proceeds will go towards the Lift through the Silverton Cowork Society. If you are coming to the party on March 23rd, please donate in advance! And if you're not coming, but you're inspired by what I've said, and eager to see something being done about economic development in our community, please donate anyway! Most grants that we are looking at require matching dollars. So all proceeds are greatly, greatly appreciated and will go eventually towards renovating and furnishing the space as well as general start up costs. I'm really not looking to debate in the comments about any particular issue but I am happy to discuss with people in person or over private messenger any questions they may have about what the heck a cowork space is? What the plans are with the Lift, or any other ideas you may have to help our community stay vibrant and awesome. If you've read through all this, thank you so much for your time and consideration! It means a lot <3 I hope to see lots of you at Odin's on March 23rd 9pm-1am so get GEARED UP for some wicked dancing and just celebrating how amazing this place is and how grateful we are to be here.
