Eric Tuck, president of Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 107, which represents HSR drivers, said that "unanswered questions" and conversations happening behind "closed doors" leaves the union with concerns. He said the union has operating and maintenance rights along that route and wants it to be "locally ran and controlled." Private operation is a "non-starter," he said. "If it's given to a private company, our experience is...we lose all control over the fares, we lose all control over the level of service and the level of maintenance," he said. "These types of systems are run into the ground...if they aren't being maintained properly, you can have some real disasters."

The decision today by Greyhound Bus to cease operations in Canada is devastating for remote, rural, Indigenous and Northern communities and leaves more than 300 ATU members without jobs in a time of global crisis. This situation was totally avoidable but instead was further entrenched by total inaction and lack of funding on the part of the Trudeau government and deregulation of the Motor Coach Industry by the Ford government in Ontario: The closure of intercity transit tod...ay has torn a hole in the fabric of our country, which will take decades to repair, said Di Nino. Good news for transit riders, particularly low-income ones, in #Winnipeg just in time for the new year! We need more local governments to act to make transit cheaper and more affordable especially during a global pandemic.

On behalf of ATU Canada, we want to express our deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Edmonton ATU Local 569’s Union Brother Gerald Berg who tragically passed away on Tuesday due to COVID-19. Gerald served as a transit worker for Edmonton Transit Services for over 20 years during the 1970s to 1990s and was an avid ATU member and supporter until his final days. It is the dedication of workers like Gerald Berg that make our union as strong as it is. Our thoughts and prayers are also with our brothers and sisters of ATU Local 569 as they deal with this difficult loss
