EIGHT PEOPLE CHARGED IN FENTANYL-RELATED WARRANT EXECUTION IN GEORGINA In a continued effort targeting suspects involved in trafficking fentanyl in the Town of Georgina, investigators with the York Regional Police #3 District Criminal Investigations Bureau, Property Crime Unit, have charged eight people and seized more than 100 grams of fentanyl after executing a search warrant at a residence on Canal Street. Between July 1, 2020, and September 18, 2020, officers responded to... an increase in calls related to drug overdoses in the Town of Georgina. Investigators believe that at least two deaths and 14 overdose calls are connected to fentanyl. Officers were also concerned about a very potent blue-coloured fentanyl that was involved in many of these incidents. On Friday, November 13, 2020, investigators executed a Controlled Drugs and Substances Act search warrant at a residence on Canal Street, where they found eight suspects who were charged with a variety of offences, including Possession, Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking, Possession for the Purpose of Distribution and Fail to Comply with Judicial Release Order. The following drugs were seized: 129 grams of powdered fentanyl 296 grams of cannabis 0.14 grams of cocaine A list of the eight people who have been charged and the charges is available for viewing at the following link: https://bit.ly/35EiYp1 Fentanyl is 100 times more potent than morphine. If mistaken for another less-potent opioid like morphine, heroin or oxycodone, overdoses can easily occur. Depending on how it’s administered, the user may not notice the difference until it’s too late. Like all opioids, overdosing on fentanyl leads to slow, irregular and shallow respirations, pinpoint pupils, muscle rigidity, seizures and unconsciousness leading to coma. Minor effects include dizziness, drowsiness, headache, sleepiness, nausea and vomiting. Two milligrams of pure fentanyl (the size of about four grains of salt) is enough to kill the average adult. If combined with alcohol and or other drugs, including prescription medications, the risk of a fatal outcome is increased. In addition, treating symptoms of fentanyl require higher doses of the antidote naloxone compared to other opioids. York Regional Police is committed to combatting the distribution of opioids in our community. For more information on how partners from across York Region are working together to reduce opioid harms, read the Opioid Action Plan. A video on the dangers of fentanyl is available for viewing here: https://youtu.be/uGXqlaj3mKE Anyone with information is asked to contact the York Regional Police #3 District Criminal Investigations Bureau at 1-866-876-5423, ext.7341, or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-tips, or leave an anonymous tip online at www.1800222tips.com.

FRAUD WARNING REGARDING ONLINE INVESTMENT AND ROMANCE SCAMS Investigators with the York Regional Police Financial Crimes Unit would like to remind citizens to be wary of online investment and romance scams after an increase in incidents being reported. Fraudsters have been targeting victims through messages on social media, emails, dating sites and online advertisements. Victims are often introduced to an investment opportunity or asked to receive money on behalf of the fraud...ster. In some cases, the fraudsters are claiming to know crypto-currency traders/investors or to be one themselves and they promise large returns. They will go as far as setting up websites where victims can log in and see funds in their accounts. In many instances, these fraudsters are using fake names and identities or impersonating existing legal companies to solicit victims and to appear legitimate. The fraudster will continually ask for more money and fees and eventually, victims can't get any of their invested money back. In romance type scams, fraudsters will build trust with a victim, then ask them to receive money and forward that money to others. In most cases, this money has been obtained from other online fraud victims and is essentially being laundered. If someone is asking you to send cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Litecoin, Etherum and other cryptocurrencies be very cautious. These online investments and investors are not licenced or regulated in Ontario. York Regional Police is reminding citizens to be cautious if you receive solicitations or notifications for any type of cryptocurrency trading or investing as this type of currency is designed to be anonymous and can rarely be tracked. If a situation feels suspicious, trust your instincts never invest in something you do not fully understand or with people or businesses that you cannot confirm are legitimate. Do not receive money transfers or deposits from unknown persons. We encourage citizens to share fraud prevention tips with friends and family, especially seniors or newcomers to Canada, who are frequently the targeted victims of frauds and scams. If you have been a victim of a fraud, and have lost money, report the incident promptly to the York Regional Police Financial Crimes Unit either online at https://www.yrp.ca/en/online-reporting/Report-a-Crime.asp or by calling 1-866-876-5423, ext. 6627. To report frauds where no money has been lost, contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre online or by calling 1-888-495-8501.
